Cakes or Casing?

I'm about to start my first grow very soon, i was just looking at some casing teks, and i was wondering if i should even waste my time with cakes? Ive heard that casing takes a while to get down, so i guess my real question is "Will i benefit more with casing, if i have some cake experience under my belt?"

I started with casings, but I had the help of someone who knew what they were doing.

You will still use cakes initially. When the cakes are fully colonized, you crumble and case. This is the easiest method I've seen here and not that hard to do. Follow the directions on your chosen tek and search the forum for any questions you might have. If you can't find a clear answer to a question using the search feature, start a post and ask the members.
Good luck with your casing man. You can do it.

in addition to providing a microclimate, the casing layer acts as a contaminant barrier.

Oh yeah, i was totally planning on making cakes, but i guess i should have asked "is fruiting from cakes a waste of time, or should i case them?"

We usually start people with cakes so that they will get some fruits their first time out. Being your first time there is a good chance of failure...and cakes are more contam resistant for newbies.
For years I used to start all my new strains out on cakes...to make sure that I wouldn't fail...because I had less contams with cakes...and so that I would be sure to have prints to work with.
Working with cakes isn't a bad thing.
Moving on to casings and bulk substrates is where you will want to end up!~

Skip the BRF and go with WBS. There is a little prep work involved, but well worth it. From there you can do grain to grain transfer or simply case.
I used this tek and it worked great: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/26004
If you still want to use BRF try your local health food store like Whole Foods Market or Vitamin Cottage. It'll cost you about $3-$4 a bag compared to $1-$2 for the wild bird seed (depending on the size you get).

I am growing for the first time and was also wondering the same question last week. This article really made me decide to use casing instead of cakes
I am actually starting casing today using the 50/50+ method. I'm not afraid to try new things, and it looks like the yield from casing is quite a bit better! Peace

Do both. That way you have a back up for one or the other. I think thats the safest way to make sure you get something.
Plus you can explore a little more and play and see what works best for you.
REMEMBER, just because its on this site, it does not mean its the only way to do it. People are always improving TEKs and making improvements.
EXPERIMENT!

I was wondering if you did crumble it up and cased it, would it help if I'd put a layer of uncolonized substrate (sterile) below the the colonized layer.. would that help produce more flushes?

Yes it would help. What you just wanted to do, I think, is bulk growing. You take colonized substrate and combine it, spawn, with something with nutrients, this can be many things. Check the TEK's, but I understand pasteurized, not sterilized, horse poo works quite well. Then you allow this spawn to fully colonize, about 7-10 days. After full colonization you case this. You start with a much larger chunk of mycelium. Lot of nutrients to produce much bigger and better flushes. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick
