Moderating humidity with salts and the like?
    #4039239 - 04/10/05 11:13 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I know you can use salt to calibrate a hydrometer. Supposedly it will stabelize humidity at 75% in a sealed environment.

I'm wondering if there are any other substances out there that moderate humidity. Or something that one could add to the salt to change the point at which it stablizes to... , say at 85% instead of 75%? I'm trying to find an easier way to get a good casing humidity and this thought crossed my mind when I was reading about humidity gauge calibration.

doesn';t dry salt work as a desiccant when placed in a sealed inviroment?

not for drying out shrooms but you know like if your making a print in your glove box throw some salt in a dish and it absorbs moistre right?

I'm using perlite now... but I'm thinking for casing. It's easy to hit 99%-100% humidity with perlite... but how do I go about maintaining 85%? That why I'm wondering about the "regulating" powers of salt.

Thanks for the link. So would this work? Assuming I could get enough Potassium chloride to fill my chamber with, the humidity would stabelize around 85% - or am I just complicating things here?

From what I understand, yes... but when moistened, salts will also regulated humidity predictably in a sealed container. This property is used to calibrate humidifiers.

Yes you are

Just leave the lid off a crack, put some holes in the tub, or fan more. Remove some perlite (less surface area, so only covering half the bottom or something, thickness of the perlite isnt your concern here, Surface Area is..so dont just remove 1 inch of perlite or something) or insert a cool mist hose could work too. Or an air wand on a fish tank pump not submerged underwater too.
