Why is prostitution illegal, but pornography is legal? Both incidents have parties being paid for sex, simply because it's on camera it's more ethical and the lawmakers don't care about it?
On a side note: If you wanted to pick up hookers but were afraid of cops, simply tell them you are a porn producer and that you'll be paying them for appearing in one of your films.

prostitution is illegal because it's difficult to regulate and (especially in places like the south) can result in the spreading of AIDS and other diseases. Porn is a heavily regulated industry, and all porn stars are regularly checked for every disease out there.

It's not mandatory, though. If I want to videotape me fucking chicks and pay them for it, I'm not compelled under any statute that i'm familiar with to test or have them tested for disease.

One is easier to tax, and control revenue off of, the other isn't.
Oh yeah, also health risks, as most people that watch porn don't get the clap as a result of it, at least not that I've heard of.

If prostitution was legal and regulated it would be much safer....the only reason it is illegal is the influence of christian fundamentalists on our government, and the general apathy of most Americans. Porn is legal because people would flip the fuck out if it was banned.

All one needs to do is go to Amsterdam, or even Nevada, to see how easily prostitution can be legally regulated.

Legally, I believe they distinguish between the act of paying money for sex (illegal prostitution) and the act of videotaping consensual sex for money (legal pornography). It seems a stupid distinction to me, but by outlawing prostitution they can attack the lower classes and those who couldn't defend themselves, while I bet the porn directors and actors could put up quite a legal fight.
