Sterilized Dry Rotted Hardwood as a Substrate

I've been hiking a lot recently and often run across dry rotted hardwood logs. The wood is soft and pulplike and breaks apart with minimal effort. I've been thinking of gathering this in jars and sterilizing it in a pressure cooker just like you wood anything else and then trying to use it as a substrate for a woodloving species (particurally some sort of shelf fungi). Has anyone tried this? One concern I have is that because the wood is dry rotted some of the nutritional value may not be there. However, I'd think that soft texture and partial digest might make it more appealing for fungus edibility. What do you guys suggest?
BTW -- I can't identify the different species of log very well at all considering thier age. I know a few I've run across were sycamore, and a few seemed to be oak.

And there is where God lives, where the dead live, the spirits and the saints, a world where everything has already happened and everything is known. That world talks. It has a language of its own. I report what it says. The sacred mushroom takes me by the hand and brings me to the world where everything is known. It is they, the sacred mushrooms, that speak in a way I can understand. I ask them and they answer me. When I return from the trip that I have taken with them, I tell what they have told me and what they have shown me." -- Mazatec shaman

If it's old and rotten, it's already been used up by other fungi. You want fresher, chipped hardwoods. RR

Sounds interesting. It just seems that there are too many variables with random peices of dry rotted wood. Some mushrooms require a certain kind of wood to grow on for example. I would clone the mushroom that I wanted and figure which type of wood that is needed. Not saying don't try it, just my two cents.
