Central WA morels

did some morel hunting this weekend.  after a few hours searching on saturday, all I was able to turn up was a lone blond morel from a plum orchard that I "seeded" with morel spores a few years back.  they've been coming up every year in there since, but this spring has been unusually dry and windy, and they haven't started irrigating the trees yet, so all I found was one f'n half dessicated morel:

also found some shaggy manes, inky caps, mica caps and a meadow mushroom down on the riverbanks, along with a couple other small dry yellow morels. nothing very encouraging or worth eating.

anyway, my dad's friend mentioned the other day that he had a bunch of morels come up in some shredded bark he used to mulch his yard a couple weeks ago, but they were too old by the time he found them or something.  well my dad went over there this morning and I guess there were morels still coming, they were black morels and dude was only familiar with the yellows, so he thought they were too old when they were fine, heh.  woulda been nice to have got there a few days ago, but there were still a lot of good ones.  I didn't get in on the picking unfortunately, so no outdoor pics, but here's most of what I got out of it. the total haul nearly filled a grocery sack, probably 5-6 pounds, right in the backyard, good shit .  some of the older ones were pretty large, palm sized caps or so.

one of the reasons I love spring , hehe

now it just needs to rain and warm up again :yesnod:...

DH

Good eats!

I think lack of rain is holding them back in Ohio. We could use a good two day rain.

Nice, DH! Someone reported finding morels on Whidbey in some planting pots. Sounds like it's time for some lowland forays!

mmmmmmmmm   looks tasty!

prolly a little too cold to start looking higher up the mountains... but I sure can't wait till it warms up!  At $2.55 a gallon I doubt I'd go further east than that

anyways, great find!  hope we make it out together sometime this spring :sun:
