My first post to the forum, hello all!
So I started my journey around a month ago, bought all my supplies for inoculation of cakes ect. So theyve been incubating in a TiT for like 3 and half to 4 weeks and out of the 12 cakes I have, Id say like 5 or 6 are 100% colonized. *Crosses fingers, knocks on wood* No contams yet! but some jars dont even seem to want to colonize the bottom of the jar, so I flipped them and still nope and for somereason my cheap ass submersible heater fluxuates temps, but I finally got it working I guess, it used to be at 78 degrees and then go to 92+ Im going to take 2 of the worst cakes and try to case them with a 50/50 peat mix, for fun so to my question. Ill post pics on how my cakes look so far tomorrow.
Ive been around E V E R Y W H E R E, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, even a hydroponic water gardening store looking for Geolite, Ive even used names like LECA, Hydroton, Grow Rocks, and I even tried to find lava rocks but NOBODY has them, and the lava rocks they do have are 2 quart bags and I need a hell of a lot of them.... I have a 96 quart rubbermaid as my PMP so every person said that I need a BIG BAG of the rocks right? Nobody has them period! I heard that you can smash bricks to use for a ghetto lavarock thing, and I heard that you can use the lava rocks for grilling for your PMP as well, so my questions are, 1) What do you use for humidification? Im not going to use perlite, I tried it and it got really really messy, so I want other options, the guy at the water gardening center says they use this very porous lightweight platic stuff now instead of lavarocks should I try that? and 2) Where do you recommend I FIND geolite, or what do I ask for, people around here seem to be retarded (Im from Massachusetts) and there are no good places to get a hygrometer, where do you recommend? Please respond ASAP I need to birth my babies soon >_<

Welcome
Don't fruit the cakes is my advice, case them all. Casings require no external humidification or perlite/geolite any of that, just misting of the casing surface and occasionally the fruiting chamber walls is all that's needed.

Greetings. May you learn bulk substrates & prosper.
Check with landscape suppliers, for pumice stone gravel, or lava rock gravel. You can also use a Dura-Cool 24X36 swamp cooler evaporative pad (WalMart).

So you're saying that a PmP doesn't do much for cased trays? So it works mostly for cakes only? And I only find that out today, the exact I finished a very nice PmP...
Pls Diver, enlighten my noob knowledge in this subject, pls

PmP will support cakes OR casings. You can run casings in there just fine, yes. PmP is a great build/investment, you're fine.
I'm a minimalist and prefer the simple fruiting tub using only misting of casings to meet humidity requirements.

Dunking and rolling will cut down on your humidification needs. Therefore only a spraying once or twice a day should suffice.

Kinda outta the way town near Framingham, suburb of Boston. Thanks all for the input, Im definitly thinking about casing more than 2 of my cakes because I read another thread that said it was worth it to try more or something :P The only problem is, I dont want to case all my cakes, and end up with nothing to show for all my hard work :P Also thinking of trying a WBS Tek, Can anybody send me a link to a preferred one? ^_^ Im rather lazy
Oh and can somebody tell me how to toss pics of my cakes up on here? Im retarded I asked around in school today if anybody knew where to snag some lavarocks/hydroton and we seem to use it in the science classes so one of my buddies said he will uh..."borrow" it for me :P
But we'll see! Thanks again for input, I was shocked to see how fast I got replies! You guys are great! Keep on growing my little mycologists!

well, the search function takes less time than posting a question, especially on a topic which is readily found. really, man, the main page has that cultivation drop-down bar that will put you in the right spot- all this studying is your part. not to be an asshole, but if you don't read and just ask, some people might very well be
here is doc's wbs tek. if you're going to print it out, use 6tango's tek (less color photos)
have fun
beat me eh... maybe I need more sleep...

You can case like 2 cakes per casing if you feel you'll have better results. but the more you case the better the flush.

>>>Oh and can somebody tell me how to toss pics of my cakes up on here?
At the top of the forum it should have your screenname. Right underneath that click on "My Pics". Here you click on "upload" and you can upload your pics. I think the limits are 1mg per day, 200k per pic. Once you upload your pics, it'll have some text that you can copy/paste into your post that'll post your pics... Lemme know if you need anything else, and GL bro

LoL I know Psilocyben, I played around with the search button I knew where to find it, and I sound like an idiot, but I was just asking. I take no offense, I should've been looking around but I wasnt thinking correctly... Still in a classroom and they monitor my crap and such, so I wanted to spend the littlest amount of time I could on the site, Wont happen again, Sorry all!
Now Im home though! and just took some pics of my jars, I havent decided if this gunk is contams, with my luck it is, I dont think I was very sterile while innoculating, I used Lysol everywhere and flamed my syringe, and cooked, but didnt use a glovebox and I did it in my living room LoL. It just looks like really think mycelium, but it has a yellow tinge!! Here, Ill post pics!

K here are pics--- First question is how do they look to begin with? I think all the uncolonized stuff towards the top is the dry verm. 2nd question is by the looks of things how long (estimate) should I wait to dunk and roll/birth/case? Ive circled areas (with my intense photoshop skillz) that I think are not quite what they should be...
And theres the bottom
Heres a shot of moisture that I cant seem to get rid of, If I'm not mistaken that's bad right? Its only on the sides of a few jars or the bottoms and I believe its b/c of the fluctuating temps my TiT gives off I loosened the lids and it didn't seem to help much
Here are several shots of the yellowness I hate to believe could be contams Unless you were serious about the mycelium pee :P
and the last pics are shots of the jars that seem to be questionable and I don't understand why they've stopped colonizing, all the others keep going, but they don't seem to be any different! I know patience is the key to this, but I'm just worried I'm going to fail on my first grow >_<
Sorry I'm asking so many questions to you all, I just want it to go so well, and thank you all for responses. I'm sure you're all bored of answering the same things over, but I thank you all SO much for helping me along my path! P.S. I apologize for any blurry shots, My digicam isn't that great =/

what substrate are you using kaydren? Brown rice and vermic? or something else? Its been a couple of weeks? What strain? Personally (note im no expert like diver and them....) i would birth em and then break off the uncolonized parts and case them bastards... if they havent fully colonized yet it they may not. But thats just me saying from what ive read and what little experience i have. good luck man! I wish you the best.

Thanks for the advice Crunk I was actually thinking that, as you can see there are parts that dont want to colonize on a few cakes
BRF+Verm, its been like 4 weeks O_O B+ strain, I heard it was good for noobs

take a tek, read it... then re-read it. Go through all the steps and make sure you gots it memorized. Then when you are doing the steps out and you think something would be better one way change it up. The teks are pretty much the, "guidelines." Its really all about trial and error.

has anyone ever dropped a jar and lost it while trying to stack it for a good picture
-------------------- The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride... And we... kill those people. - Bill Hicks
