Outdoor Above Ground Cultivation
    #4038137 - 04/10/05 08:06 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

http://www.mygardenguide.com/tutorials/t...om</font>

I am going to be building a raised bed garden similar to the one posted above this year for growing some veggies outdoors for myself, friends and family.

This brought up a question of growing mushrooms in a manner similar to this. I would start off making 2-3 3'x2' frames like this, modified so that they have a double thick layer of black plastic at the bottom to keep out the grasses/weeds/slugs. The plastic would be perforated some to allow for drainage. Then I'd put a 3-5" layer of dry vermiculite / DE (again, water absorbtion and slug prevention). On top of this would be added compost/straw. The compost/straw would be spawned with colonized grains (p. cubensis, s. r-a., any poop-loving mushroom). I would put a layer of plastic over the top to allow this to colonize. When it was near fully colonized, I would add a 2-4" casing layer and remove the plastic sheeting. This still would not be placed in the hot sun (where I have my veggie garden is exposed to light constantly) so the casing layer would not be dried out. I'd keep this in the shade under some trees. I'm thinking that after the casing layer was colonized, it would fruit naturally due to light exposure (and, of course, ideal temperatures). As the temperature here goes from the 70-90's in the day and the 50-70's in the night ,I'd think that cubensis would fruit here from the middle of spring until the middle to end of fall. Would this work? Should I pasteurize the compost/straw that I'd use as substrate? Thanks.

, then put down 4-6" of (unpasteurized, moistened) compost and straw, mixed with spawn,

heh, it's actually for s.r-a (stropharia ruggoso-annalta[sp]). I'm thinking that this could be modified for outdoor grown cubes in the middle of nowhere.

I would build something like that and plant vegetables or flowers in it. Use manure and lots of compost and good top soil to build the raised bed. Then, bury your mushroom spawn right in around the plants. The plants give shade, and the mushrooms help break down the manure to make it available for the plants. They'll get along great! Mulch with an inch or so of dry straw to keep the sun off the beds.

Proly not a bad idea either. You'd be surprised at the non-attention that something in the wide open gets. RR's idea sounds great.

Here is a experimental successful outdoor grow sans tents. Just gives you an idea of what KISS can achieve. The 2 details requiring the most attention are, as you correctly gauged, maintaining proper moisture and keeping pests away.

erect a tent around itfor humidity and protection.

wouldn't you have to walk over your casing to pick the fruits in the middle?

tents will do absolutely zilch for deterring pests. otherwise they work great for maintaining moisture. they are rather conspicuous tho. nature's shade works just as well and works as camoflauge too.

If my memory serves me you need to talk to joshua, hees had a raised bed with a tent with a grow log for 2 seasons already. Ask for a link to his log or dig it out yourself.

I would use sand instead of vermiculite for the bottom layer.

You may find this link helpful. The idea I employed is very similar to the one you are thinking of.

I have no idea. Search for "Shroom Gardening", include the quotation marks.

It would appear that I am resurrecting an old post. It says in big bold letters “WARNING! The last post in this topic is more than 30 days old! (exactly 2584 days) Please only post a reply if it is truly relevant!!” I think it is relevant. At least it shows I did try to find what I am looking for with the search function.

I have similar goals. I have long raised vegetable garden beds that are filled with a bottom layer of composted vegetable waste, old timothy hay, shredded newspaper and rabbit manure. (Yup, I have my own little fertilizer factory.) Next there is about 3” – 4” of good black soil on top followed by another about 3” of wheat straw to choke out the Creeping Charlie and other nasty weeds. In years past I have gotten wine cap peg spawn from field and forest and had relatively good success in plain unpasteurized straw behind the garage in the shade, but it was a pain to get back there to harvest. I would like to just grow mushrooms in the raised beds where they are easier to harvest and I water regularly anyway. I think I may have had volunteer portabellas come up from waste bits that were mixed in (but since I couldn’t be 100% sure, I just disposed of them) so to me that would indicate I have a good location to grow mushrooms. But I don’t know what or how would be the best way to inoculate that 3” of straw on top. I have my lets grow mushrooms DVDs, but it didn’t really go into what to do in a garden situation like mine. I’m thinking I would like to grow oysters as they are reputed to be easy, but am very open to any suggestions. The beds get direct sun for part of the day, but they are in a clearing surrounded by woods. I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what variety and what sort of spawn and method to use to inoculate them as I am just this side of a complete and total newbie.

Thanks in advance for advice,

Miss Kitty

I just realized this is in the advanced section. If the mods would move this to a more appropriate area I would appreciate it.

Elm oysters would be a better bet.  I'm assuming you want them in conjunction with your garden which will work out fine.  The garden plants will shade the surface for the mushrooms. P cubensis would also work well, and help break down the organic matter to make it available for the plants.

Ok, elm oysters it is since I want edible culinary mushrooms and not the "naughty" ones (although I do hear they have been doing research using magic mushrooms to treat cluster migraine headachs so I don't know how naughty they really are.). Anyone have suggestions as to what method of inoculation I should use? I have seen peg spawn on amazon.com for the elm oysters or should I go with a grain spawn and use that?
