IDEAL INCUBATOR & FRUITING CHAMBER
    #4036934 - 04/10/05 01:36 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I do not mean to be repetitive. But, after trials I cannot help but shout out the effectiveness of a DEAD UPRIGHT FRIDGE / FREEZER as an incubator / fruiting chamber.

If you have the ability, room & means to haul, set up, and modify one. A dead upright freezer, or refrigerator (free from appliance repair places) makes an ideal combination incubator & fruiting chamber.

ADVANTAGES: FREE. They don?t look out of place in a spare room, or garage, are secure & can be locked. They are easy to acquire, well insulated, have great built in large capacity shelves, seals & a drain in the bottom.

They are easy to modify with CoolMist fresh air exchange, humidify, heat, install a light in & clean. With a off/on timer they can be easily automated. With probe type digital sensors the interior temperature & rh can be monitored outside the box.

NESTED TRAYS

SOME RESULTS:

WBS spawn @ 30% rate to bulk substrate,
cased verm/peat/coir, 75F, RH 85/87%, 12/12 light.

I just need to ask one stupid question. What is the purpose of the aluminum foil in the trays?

With 2, side by side..... in one you can incubate spawn jars/bags & spawned substrate. Then rotate colonized cased sub's into the other for fruiting. They are TOILET FLUSH SIMPLE to modify.

This is the newer type Vicks CoolMist - cost $20.
You don't even have to remove the top - to refill.

Light will pass through most inexpensive plastic trays. Which will cause side & bottom pinning . The aluminum foil between the two makes the nested trays impervious to light from the sides or bottom.

Or use Bus Boy trays. Big & tougher than nails & no light gets through them. Spendy, though... compared to most other trays.

hell yea to the bus boy trays. I happen to be a waiter at a restaurant, and one night they asked me to do something with some old trays. I took a look at them, the wheels started turning, and i ask "what do you want me to do?". They said they didnt care.

A few days later, I had a glove box, a fruiting chamber, and an incubating chamber. Hot damn.

" :confused:fruiting chamber "........ black bus boy trays are to hold spawned substrate, which when colonized is placed into a fruiting chamber. The trays are not fruiting chambers.

Hello Agar, if you were explaining to me: I know that, thats why I was *suspicious* towards american nightmare.

He also made a flowhood from it so it seems,  I am not into flowhoods so I dont know about that. But a FC from those trays seems questionable!

BUT I would love to get me some of those black trays. Mine now are transparant and even though I use alufoil, sidepinning is occuring. The alufoil is reflecting the little light available (often after a flush or 2) so sidepins occur now and then. Mostly they grow upwards but when havestesting them the shroombase can be 2 inches below the substrate... :frown:

hey agar, I was wondering what would you use for heat to heat that up? Also, you'd use a cool mist to keep the RH up? How does it to this all evenly?

FOR FRUITING: If room temps where the BOX is situated are close to 70F the tiny  light bulb inside it on a 12/12 cycle generates enough heat to raise the internal temp close to 76F by the end of light cycle. Then it will cool down during the off light cycle close to 74F. Which is a perfect fruiting temp range.

FOR INCUBATION: A small watt fish tank heater with an adjustable thermostat sealed in a glass jar (heat bomb) will maintain 80F (or - whatever temp you want).

In the FRUITING MODE the piped in COOLMIST on 24/7 provides fresh air exchange & maintains the RH at 85/87%. Stale air & condensation vent out the bottom DRAIN.

If a higher RH is desired (for cakes)? A fountain fogger or ultrasonic humidifier placed inside the BOX on a timer 5 or 10 minutes ON every 2 hours will raise the RH to around 98/100%.

I hope that explains it.

So the white pipe on the top is where the humidity is pumped into the box?

Yup.

This is where it enters, on the inside.
