Tetracycline
    #4036912 - 04/10/05 01:26 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I'm just visiting this forum, and I haven't searched for prior discussions on this subject but...
Pet Supermarket and other pet stores carry Tetracycline capsules (00 size yellow and orange) in the tropical fish department for killing 'Ich' and other bacterial infections in fish. I used to be prescribed these same capsules for pimples and acne when I was in high school before it became unpopular to prescribe (30+ years ago) because of different dangers.

Anyway...Tetracycline does not autoclave/sterilize without turning brown and presumably inert, but, if you are hydrating spores in sterile water, and you add just a tiny bit of the Tetracycline - enough just to tinge your spore-water light yellow - you will NOT develop bacterial contamination. It won't eliminate fungal contaminants, but if bacteria has been a problem, it doesn't have to be any more.

how much do the pills cost? and will it affect the final effect of the shroom or dependency of the spores?

Ok, tetra is good for bact contam, but will it affect the mycellium in any way? Also, if tet is good to use what about other antis. I work in a lab and have access to penecillin, sulfamethazine and the tetracycline. Would the pen or sulfa do the same?

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. They used to hand out 6 of these capsules during college days for a case of Gonorrhea. Penicillin seems to me more specific for Streptococcus or Spirochetia (like Syphillis), but then I'm a microbiology drop-out. Tetracycline caps are available OTC so I use them. Don't know about sulfa or the others, but there aren't any blood-based pathogens or medium used in mycology. Tetracycline is used for treating trees!

Tetracycline is going to be added in tiny amounts - enough to kill bacteria in the water or on the spores. It is not going to effect the genetics of the mushroom. The capsules might set you back a whopping 2-3 bucks

Thought I would post this for anyone interested.  From "Brock Biology of Microorganisms" 10th ed.

Can Doxycycline or Minocycline be alternatives to Tetracycline ?
Have heard that Tetracycline can block the calcium uptake on humans. I don't know about the effects on mushrooms but calcium plays an important role in mushroom health and probably potency.

Doxycycline IS Tetracycline as far as I know. I bought some over the counter in Nigeria when I developed non-specific urethritis. It also helped my GI tract. Listen, Tetracycline messes up your teeth and causes intense photosensitivity (not good in the Florida sun), but I'm not talking about consuming it, I'm talking about adding a few milligrams to a 100 ml of water that spores are sitting in. Sheesh, this stuff isn't Plutonium and I'm a health nut!

They're all part of the cycline family. Tetracycline is most affected by calcium, zinc, magnesium salts in digestion. The problem is it binds to these so your body can't take them up. I have no idea if this would be a problem with cultivation.
I do know, Tetracycline is by far the most sensitive to calcium, etc. Then doxy is better, but not perfect. Minocycline is relatively good, but that shit's expensive.

if you are hydrating spores in sterile water, and you add just a tiny bit of the Tetracycline - enough just to tinge your spore-water light yellow - you will NOT develop bacterial contamination.

Antibiotics shouldn't be used preemptively.

Antibiotics treat the symptoms of contamination, not the problem. If you have a contamination problem, perhaps because of sloppy sterile technique or a dirty grow room, you should improve your technique or clean your grow room.

Trying to fix a contamination problem with antibiotics will select for antibiotic resistance in the vector. When that happens, antibiotics will no longer work and you'll have an even bigger problem then when you started.

Use antibiotics very sparingly and only when you're sure all other measures to block contamination are optimized so you don't end up with super-bacteria roaming your lab.

Just my 2 cents.
