Slitting and seeds
    #4036101 - 04/10/05 03:24 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Can poppy pods still produce viable seeds even after lancing?  I've wondered this as I still want seeds from the pod and the alkaloids.

It sounds like I'm being too demanding from the plant, first I'm slicing it several times, letting it bleed, then expect it to produce seeds even after the abuse...cruel humans

You could slice all pods except one. That way you will still be able to harvest most of the opium, and thousands of seeds from the healthy pod. In one of Wiccan Seeker's posts, he said that lancing can be bad for seed development...

a double-edged sword, really.

On the one hand lancing and then harvesting indeed harms the quality of the seed. On the other hand 10% viability is no problem if it allows you to select the seeds from the pods that produced the most Gum Opium.

I know the latter technique created some useful Opium poppy strains. You want a good oozer but not a dripper. Some pods produce literally 100x the opium that others do. You've got 2mg yielders and 200mg yielders on the other extreme. It needs be said as a warning that low weight harvested often means extreme potency.

If you grow something useful, select. Develop the species. It's how the Dutch actually created the strongest weed of the world from rope hemp. No GM, but selection from populations, as commanded by the Bible that basically says: "Grow next year's crop from this year's best grain and use the poorer grain to make flour."

Imagine a field of 1.000 poppies. Imagine taking the seed of the best poppy to sow next year's field. The seed from the second season is basically selected from a million poppies, even if you grew just 2.000
