Meaning
    #4035383 - 04/09/05 09:51 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

How do you find meaning in Life?
You may choose only one
There is no 'meaning' in life, it's all one big senseless event.
You can't force meaning into your life. When you are prepared, life's meaning will discover you.
You have to decide what has meaning to YOU. Seek out your own purpose.

The meaning of life?

Aristotle thought that a meaningful life was one that attempted to attain the goodness within; like how a dog can be trained to be "good".

.
I agreed with most of what was said in your post but this....  A dog is inherently good, as most all animals are - in untrained, unconditioned innocence....  When you train a dog to be "good", you are training it to be "good" in your eyes to what "good" is, to YOU....  As in another household, what is considered to be "good" will most likely not be the same "good" as you have instilled upon the dog thru conditioning....  All from your own conditioning to what you call "good"....
.
.
I voted for #2, meaning finds you when you are "ready" for developing meaning in your life....

I voted #1, but not in the " there is no God" sense, more in the "life is it's own meaning" sense.

But in what way is life senseless....?
.
As perhaps we loose our real "senses" thru conditioning before they have developed....(?)
Something quoted from someone close to me(My MoMMa:heart:),
"Once we finally get all of our "senses" in life, we loose ours...."
.
Kind of gives it meaning in what I have learned today....  Funny, you can read something, and think about it over and over again, and everyday the words are the same, but you find more different meanings in the words....
.
Looking at the poll now, all three answers seem to fit....  They are all just different "stages" of existance, or sensing one's life's "meaning"....

some people can see meaning in their lives, some people can't. its a matter of perception.

Meaning is inherently subjective, I do not believe there can be an objective meaning. Therefore quite simply nothing has an undisputable meaning, but simply the meaning projected onto it.

it's just personal resonance & connections being made from that resonance

when you have a story that attaches to each aspect of a thing, that thing is full of meaning to you.

If a dog, like a wild (feral) human can be taught to transcend the fear-based aggression that dominates their respective minds, they can both develop into higher forms of being. A dog that has developed a relationship with a human will give its life for that human at times. That dog will attempt to save a human from a fire, or an attacker or an avalanche. A wild dog outside of such a relationship based on love, affection, companionship will take no interest. Humans are no different. Humans living in a 1st chakra state of motivation is no more than an animal in a jungle - there is one piece of meat available in this moment and I must have it! A beautiful woman, for example, isn't noticed for her beauty, only for her ability to sustain survival (is she carrying food or money which can be begged for or taken by force). As an Indian saying goes: 'When a thief meets a saint, all he sees are the saint's pockets.'

A trained dog learns other meanings like his/her name - a cognitive identity of sorts. The dog learns the pleasure of petting, grooming, non-essential food, i.e., treats, play, exploration (walks). True, canine cognitive meaning is fairly limited, but my late dog demonstrated symbolic language to me at times that still blows my mind. It was downright primate in cognitive degree. I mean, I'm trained in developmental psychology, and I have a couple of stories that illustrate non-linguistic but symbolic language on the part of a 12 pound mini-dachshund! But I digress.

Meaning seems to be determined by the motivational state that predominates at a given time. Finding food when one is starving 'means' that one is going to survive a while longer. Finding a willing sex partner 'means' that one is going to 'get laid.' Finding oneself in a higher paying job, receiving an inheritance or being placed in a position of authority all 'means' that personal power has increased. Finding love with someone 'means' potential union, wholeness and a possible fulfillment of the previous motivations named. Perhaps the very 'search for meaning' and its fulfillment can be cited as a 5th chakra motivation (at least this is how I identified it in my dissertation) which might be geared to human love below it (which has absorbed the yet lower motivations), and union with GOD above it as the fulfillment and ultimate meaning of existence itself.

This is a Sacred Model which has helped me to facilitate a meaningful life. Existence has meaning inasmuch as it has design - intelligent design. It is among our highest human motivations to discern meaning, communicate it to others and help dispel the suffering of meaninglessness. Despair, said Soren Kiergegaard was the great sin, the "sickness unto death." In Dante's descent to 'The Inferno,' the sign at the entrance read: "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." My hope is to Know what It All Means.

Peace.

I've felt all three of those the poll choices at different times in my life.

#1 There are times when everything is senseless, and it seems impossible to pin down a 'meaning' to it all...

#2 Then something unexpected happens in my life to wake me up from the meaninglessness of #1. All of the sudden I feel connected to everything, as if life's hidden meaning was revealed to me.

#3 Having had expiriences of the type mentioned in #2, I earnestnly desire my life to have meaning. I search for meaning by connecting events in my life with history, science, and everything else. Sometimes these efforts to find meaning are successfull; other times the connections start to unravel and I'm back to the senselessness of #1.

A realization that I eventually came to was that there is actually a pattern within my own search for meaning: the #1, #2, #3 cycle mentioned above. Knowing this has made my life meaningfull ever since, even in the middle of phase #1.
