212 Pot Plants Found in Ariz. Rental Home

PHOENIX (AP) -- An enormous garden of 212 marijuana plants was discovered inside a rental home west of Phoenix early Saturday morning.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say the garden, nurtured by an intricate irrigation and lighting system, is worth tens of thousands of dollars and is one of the most sophisticated they've ever seen.

"We've just never seen a more elaborate setup in a house," said Sheriff's Office Sgt. Travis Anglin. "It's a completely self-sufficient system."

With the lighting and water systems controlled by timers, "you can just come every few weeks and take what you need," Anglin said.

No one was living in the house, which has an out-of-state owner. The owner told the sheriff's office he was renting out the house and was unaware of the illicit vegetation thriving on his property, Anglin said.

The system consisted of hoses running from faucets to 50-gallon drums that fed a timed irrigation system. Reflective material covered walls, and filtration devices were attached to air ducts in an effort to prevent strong smells from seeping out.

But the filtration system didn't work as well as intended. While on an unrelated call in the neighborhood earlier in the week, a deputy detected "an overwhelming odor of marijuana" coming from the home.

Plants ranged in size from seedlings to budding marijuana plants that were 4-feet-tall and could have produced $10,000 each in income, Anglin said.

If growing weed was that profitable, everyone would be doing it. Are they claiming that 2 million dollars worth of trees were in that home? If that really was the case, a lot more people would be doing it.

8 years now! lol

it is true everyone would be. i have personally noticed a big price range diffrence in area. i live in the woods and my neighbor grows he sells it to me for dirt cheap! when i go into the city the same weed is sold for 10 times what i bought it for. and in ritzy places like where i go to school at least 50 times more then what i paid...so damn! there are big big diffrences

A four foot tall plant can easily produce a pound (450g) with a good strain, hydro system and co2, and a pound of weed really can sell for 6,500 if it's the dankest of the dank. so if you up that total to a pound and a half (670g) off a 4ft plant then there you go, 10k a plant.

This is really the same shit that's been going on for years up in Canada...whole houses devoted to growing weed. tons of people already ARE doing it, because it IS that profitable.

I've always wondered how police get their rediculously high figures when they try to value drugs from a big bust. My theory is that they put a price on a single dose or the smallest quantity the drug is usually sold in, and multiply that by the amount found.

Its hard to say what a single dose of weed weighs, but the smallest quantity that I've ever seen someone sell of the dankest weed is a gram for $20. A pound (~450g) x $20/g = $9000. So if the police figure each plant yeilded a little more than a pound it would be $10k per plant.

It is rediculous to scale things down in this way. There's no chance in hell that someone growing 212 plants is going to be selling it all in grams. It just makes the police officers look better on paper and TV for what sounds like a bigger bust than what it really is.

Anyway, enough of that. I'm tired and ready for bed. I've been awake for 57,600 seconds.
