kratom growing questions...
    #3765834 - 02/11/05 08:19 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I finally found a source of kratom within Europe - a bit expensive should i say - and before i order one i should know a few more things about this plant.

Hopefully someone here will be able to help...

Could a kratom tree stand hot and dry summers (often reaching 40?C / 100?F+), as long they're well watered?

Could it stand barely above freezing temperatures (>2?C / 35?F), or should it be brought inside in the winter?

Does it prefer sun or shade?

Basically, i'm wondering if it could be grown outdoors in the transition between zones 9 and 10...

Thanks!

Hot, yes. Dry.... no. They live in a very tropical environment and prefer high humidity.

They would most certainly perish if they were subjected to that kind of cold for a reasonable amount of time. Size may come into how hardy they may be to cold temps.

Kratom plants  sunlight.

I live in zone 9 and I would have to say they would not be safe(until they were a very large size and just maybe then) in the winter. Outside during mid spring(when ALL the cold is gone) through late summer. As soon as the temps drop I would relocate them inside. Good luck.

Kratom will do well in partial shade. The temperature in these microclimates is usually a few degrees less than surrounding air temperatures, so if you have a suitable spot where it won't be in full sun all day then you might be able to grow it.

However, like Atma said it won't survive the winter if you leave it out. Bring it in under some lights if you can.

Oh and kratom love getting their feet wet so keep the moisture right up there. Misting a few times a day is good too.

Yay, thanks folks.

I will leave it outside in the spring and summer in partial shade. It should take 4-5h of cool morning sun and be in the shade in the hot afternoons.

I'll bring it inside in the winter, until it gets too big to come inside. Hopefully than it may be hardy enough to stand a some cold.

If anyone's interested the european supplier is at www.entheology.net . So far i think no one knows how trustworthy he is. From his emails he seems honest though.

Hi GrendL. Nice to see you back. No not yet , the other guy is waiting for them to recover from their last travel before sending them out to people.

How are yours doing?

Esin: Bad news.... all(3) plants died and the most frustrating part is that I don't know what went wrong. I kept them indoors, always 19-21 degrees C, gave them enough water, didn't put them in direct sunlight. I ordered one more plant (from that German site, can only deliver May 05) and if that doesn't work, I give up and start growing something else....Hope you do better.

They are pretty easy to grow is what I found. Once they have established a root system, the thing grows like a tree with a huge stem growing fast. Mine died because of aphids, which really blows ass. I have my aphid probelm under control now though, I lost like 10 salvia plants too from aphids.

With all these tropical humid plants, be sure to give then 02 but they love humidity. Build or buy a green house and put them inside. Buy a ultra sonic fogger or humidifier and run for 20 minutes inside once or twice a day or buy a timer. They like fast draining soil, once the plant is established from shippment, i.e. about a month, then transfer to a nice soil mix of fox farm dirt or equivilant + some coco coir or perilite mixed in at 20% of the volume of soil to have faster draining.

Becare with fertilizer with young plants, that will kill them too.

Fluxburn: thx for the info.
I see 2 possible reasons:
- Humidity: I only kept a jar filled with water on my radiator.
- aphids: I noticed a small black insect, removed it and never paid attention to it anymore. Didn't know they are that dangerous.

yah I had 19 saliva plants, now I have 4.... be careful.

Glad I could help you out. I find the plants need to recover for a week + after shipping normally. I try to put them in a nice environment, i.e. lots of air and some humidity. I don't water the plants that much actually, and the soil is supposed to be fast draining for most of the plants in the tropical regions. I just run a ultrasonic and cool mist humidifer in a little space I have in the kitchen which I put up some pvc pipe and used painters plastic to generally cover the area.

The probelm for me is I am growing cactus and cactus hate humidity, so I am really running into a bit of a probelm area here. I don't really have the room except for on window shelves or I could use one closet to grow cactus.

With growing plants and cacti I found a learning curve myself, for indoors it is much different then outdoors. Outdoors is far easier in some aspects, pest control is minimal since nature controls pests much more effectively then no pests. Yet indoor growing you use far more propogation techniques to grow seedlings and the controlled environment provides much higher germination rates etc.

Of course you are going to learn things on the way, and a fair due of reading is necessary. I found that repotting new plants from shipping it a horrible idea. First of all the plant is shock due to changing environments due to shipping, if you repot the plant you introduce the plant to an additional variable, the shock of the new soil. Why on earth would you repot the plant until the plant has fully adjusted to your new environment? Most plants after shipping will look great, then you put them into the environment and they look like crap for the next week since they are recovering from the lack of light and temperature change. If you were to replant at this stage, you are much more likely in effect to kill your nice plant you paid highly for in some cases.

I the USA, yes.
But not in Europe.

Importing them from anywhere outside the EU requires expensive phytosanitary certificates and high shipping cost.

So far i know of two vendors that have them here. One is that german site, the other is a member here who has imported a bunch of kratom plants and will sell them for 65?.

Ok regular doods sell on ebay, doesn't bouncing bear or whoever have them. I have good luck on ebay, most of the people just are selling plants and a plant is a plant pretty much. I got seeds from bouncing bear and ebay, what matters is when they are prepared for seed mostly. I have only gotten a bad set of HBRW seeds from ebay, but the cheap price for all the other auctions offsets the foul play.

I like Iamshaman now though, since they offer nice discounts for returning customers. I wish I would have made a small purchase for my first one to get cheaper rates next time.
