Whats the fastest you've had brf jars colonize?
    #3903794 - 03/11/05 03:38 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I am on my 6th grow using brf 1/2 pints and I am experiencing an unusually quick colonization time on my last batch of jars.

They are 13 days old today, and of the 30 I did, 6 of them are 95 - 98% colonized.  Of the 24 remaining jars, only 5 are less than 75% I would say.

I got a really nice SA print from my last batch that made my syringe solution very purple in color.  I am assuming the abundance of spores in my syringes has resulted in this quick colonization, but not completely certain.

At any rate, just curious about others experience.

I have used the same inoculant for 2 batches of quart rye jars with no success, which is another issue altogether(and one I wish not to think about any further than this sentence.)  :mad2:

The fastest my cat witnessed was about 18 days (and there were mini shrooms growing all over the top layer). The longest was about a month and a week.

The cat also noticed between strains that sometimes quickness of mycelium appearance does not mean faster colonization. I.e. sometimes the mycelium that appeared later finished faster.

I have some palenques (millet in pints) that are 95% complete just coming up on 12 days. From multispore innoc.

Have you grown palenques before?

I grew them once with some crazy looking mushies.

Oh wow, I've forgotten how slow those cakes can be. You guys definitely should make it a goal to move up to filter lids + grains, you'll never look back!

Well I have tried rye + tyvek 4 times now, and have yet to have any success.

Probably gonna try it a couple more times before giving up, as well as try wbs and/or popcorn.

PF cakes have been my only success at this point.

That sucks, any reason in particular for no success? WBS is substantially easier then rye for beginners, but once you get the moisture content down for WBS you'll know exactly what to look for when you start with rye.

Water content has been screwed up is my guess.

I have tried 12 hour soak, 24 hour soak, 10 hour soak.

30 minutes simmer, 45 minute simmer.

30 minutes straining.  Thorough rinsing.

PC'ing for 1 hour, 75 minutes, 90 minutes and 110 minutes.

They have soured all 4 times, some jars have shown SOME signs of mycelium prior to souring, but the majority just have not done squat.

Its been frustrating, but I am still trying to get it down.

In the meantime, I have to keep the mushies coming in, thus I'm still doing cakes.

My cakes start fast, 90% in 9 days, but the bottom takes ages.

I just had new personal record, a pint of OI on rye, 7 days. A quart EQ on rye, 8/9 days, 100%!!

On day 6:

OI

EQ

I ran out of jars and had a syringe left one time
I did 3 b+ with 10 ml
a 250ml brf jar was 100% in 8 days!!!!

Assuming that each jar yields 4 large doses, and you have 10 jars... 40 doses... not so bad for something that can be completely automated.

Hmm, where did you get 4 large doses and 10 jars from? It's simply a master jar that ends up supplying many additional quart jars through grain to grain transfer. You have the right idea, but it's more like: 2cc's>>1 master jar>>G2G/20+quart jars>>spawn to bulk>>unlimited possibilities.

A syringe can last you a lifetime if you're sterile and do G2G's from a master jar.

Sorry I meant 4 large doses per rice cake.

I put all my jars in fruiting chamber 14days after inoculation unless the jar stalls out for some reason. 80% of my jars are ready within that time. Some have gone as long as a month tho before birthing.
The 2 biggest things that have helped me get wbs going in the last month were drain the wbs for at least an hour, making sure to shimmy/shake it every 15mins, and using liquid inoculation. The time saved from the spores having to germinate, has really gotten my jars going. And my first try at grain to grain has gone splendidly. Don't get discouraged.

I just made a thread a few days ago asking the exact same question. Out of 16 jars, half of mine fully colonized on the 12th day after inoculation. More of the EQ's than the GT's, which isn't surprising based on reports.
