I went looking for cubes today, for my first time, in a cow pasture. I didnt see to much except these 4 small mushrooms growing from a pile of cow dung with hay on top. My first thoughts were that they looked like cubensis but seemed a little small. I thought I would take them home anyways and try to get an id.

a. Habitat found in NE Georgia growing from dung with hay on top.
b. Characteristics of the gills (dark brown almost purple,
c. Measurements of cap and stem. 1 in. - 1 1/2 in. cap.
d. Characteristics of the stem:
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color puprle to dark dark brown
g. Color that the mushroom bruises brown
h. Scent of mushroom like a mushroom pizza kinda

I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it's definately not a cubensis.

Yea, I think they are some sort of panaoleous judging by the lines on the stem, and cap shape.

They're Panaeolus, that's for sure. IDing Pans to a species really requires a microscope. Most Pans that grow on cow dung are inactive.

BTW, are you looking for cubes up in Gainesville?

If so you probably won't find them. Winters are too harsh up there. I went to HS in Gainesville and we tried looking in some cow pastures up there and never found anything other than inactive Panaeolus. You really need to head down south of the perimeter if you are looking to find cubes. Anywhere south of I20 should be fair game.

NO way! here in North Fulton county( at the tip) me and a friend pulled 3 pounds wet, of cubes out of a VERY small field within 5 minutes on a ninja run with paper bags... I know, I know, sounds like bullshit, but Theshroomhermit can confirm it.
it was absolutely insane, and mind blowing. I was not aware they could fruit so much here in N-GA, although I knew they have gone up even into SC( or so reports say)
This field was so loaded the only reason I stopped to check it out was because I saw a cluster of nice cubes FROM THE ROAD, driving like 30, and I stopped to investigate. normally I won't bother if there is no cows, but I guess they rotate the fields for grazing or something
Either way, the farther south you go, of course the odds are better.. but do not despair N-Georgians

Thanks for the id guys. I was 90% sure they werent cubes, but be it as Ive never found a cube I though Id check it out.

Dont cubes make it all the way up to Tennessee? Ive also heard before that I20 is the magic line. Does anyone know for sure if cubes are fruiting around I20 yet? I think I might take a trip today but I want to be sure they're there before I take the 2-3 hour drive.

Gumby, what year did you graduate from GHS? I went there my senior year and graduated 2001.

Findaway! Good to hear from ya. Even if the cubes wont fruit in Gainesville we should definately have some weilii in about a month!!
