Do all contams smell?
    #4034393 - 04/09/05 03:36 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I'm worried because last time I messed up i got this really smelly bacteria. It was a pain to rid the smell. I think my techniques are imrpoved and I will succeed this time with at least some of the jars. Are all contams gonna smell terrible? How long into colonization till I don't have to worry about contams anymore?

Not positive, but there has to be some contams that won't smell. As far as I know cobweb doesn't smell..

You are going to have to worry about contams until you pick the mushrooms and even afterwards until you eat them. Although, cakes are much more resistant to contams when they are fully colonized. The mycelium provides a barrier to the nice wet vermiculite, and it produces an enzyme that helps fight off contams.

Just make sure you keep a dust free grow area, use lysol, and always wash your hands when working with your grow.

Good luck!

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

Usually bacteria have terrible smell, some fungi smell, but most of them don't (just a nomrmal moldy smell). If the fungi contams are to big and/or old they smell more.
