First grow, spores came, substrate question?
    #4034308 - 04/09/05 03:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

so, my 12cc syringe/eq spores came today so i got everything ready, I'm not using 240 ml cups, i bought the wrong ones but i believe its OK, the cups i am using are 336ml not much bigger.. So i am making nine cakes... I in the mixing bowl i put 7 cups of Vermiculite 2 cups of brf.. I don't know if that's absolutely correct but i think it will do.. The problem is i don't know how much water to put in.. But i put in 2 1/2 3 cups of water and only alittle water was left at the bottom of the mixing bowl so i figured this is fine... Just wanting to know what you think.. Right now there in pots with an inch of water steaming for an hour and a half.. Ill inoculate at 10 tonight.. Is every thing good? also the aluminum lids aren't very tight, but i tried my best to make them tight, is this normal... any help would be greatly appreciated thanks..

that is way too much vermiculite! You want your substrate to have a 2:1:1 ratio of verm:brf:water (4cups verm, 2cups brf, 2cups water).

Your jars will probably work, but I don't think it will be optimal. There is not a lot of nutrition in them.

If you haven't inoculated them, I suggest that you keep it that way. Redo your jars, and you will be thankful that you did!

funny thing is... The verm and bfr mixed berily filled up all the cups.. i may be low on bfr i think waters right maybe alittle high on verm but once again the cups are alittle bigger...

Listen, here's the thing. It doen't matter if your substrate barely filled your jars or not. Your ratio's are wrong. Throw in another 4 cups of verm. and fill up 6 more jars. Just because you filled the jars doesn't mean anything. You have filled your jars with mostly non-nutrious verm. 2:1:1, verm./BRF/water is the correct ratio. This is one thing that has changed very, very little over time. Don't waste your time and effort. Correct your jars now or suffer the consequences later. Just because your cup's are bigger doesn't mean you change the ratio. Use the proper ratio to make enough substrate to fill your cup's.

If you follow the recipe here: PF-Tek for Simple Minds

You will notice that the ratio is not exactly 2:1:1. It tells you to use less BRF than the 2:1 ratio that others suggest. From my understanding, Anno is the admin of that website, and I don't think he would post info that is incorrect. I followed his recipe and my jars are all fully colonized and going strong as of day 13 here.

2:1:1 is the maximum fruiting substrate. This is the ratio I believe most people are using now. I used it on 50 1/2pint jars and have averaged a little over 50 grams wet per flush thru 2 flushes. More BRF is more nutrients for the shrooms. Good Luck.
