I wouldn't buy a radio from RadioShack.

The one on the left is the one that I have, made by the same company. It kinda worries me, caushe when it gets past 90% humidity it just reads "Hi"
Other than that, its a great gauge

yeah that's why I bought the radioshack hygrometer. it reads to 95%. tested and works very, very nice. though I'll use both, I need to know which is more accurate

i think there is some way to calibrate them using salt or something...

I have an Accu-rite and it's pissing me off! I don't recommend this brand to anyone! It doesn't go above 90%, and I think the high humidity in my FC is causing it to malfunction! It just keeps blinking, but when I take it out it works fine...

I'm sorry I can't help you with your question, but could anyone recommend a brand of hygrometer?

I use an older model Radioshack and have never had any problems with it.

Dr0mni, you're right. the acu-rite is a POS and will short out on you if you have it in HIGH humidity. the radioshack is working fine right now in 95% humidity, and I don't think it will short out anytime soon. The design is alot better than the acu-rite & water doesnt get on the screen so you shoudlnt see the same defects with this one.. but if I were you I still wouldn't go out and spend $30 on it unless you're having a hard time pinning

This thing works good. these are the best you can get for the $20-30 range and presume these are not going to be damaged by high humidity (if it does, return it to radioshack - you got 30 days) I have a 90 day warranty cause I took the one on display,
I'll be using it with a 5 head mister which puts out 350ml/hour (of course it's on a timer)
I'm not having problems and don't think I will. I'll keep it in my FC for the time being, but IME you don't need to have a hygrometer in the FC 24/7.
if you have automatic misting setups, once you find your optimal humidity with using timers, you can pretty much just check the humidity every couple days by placing it in there when you have the misters on-and off-then take it out when its on again so you know that it's staying the right humidity.

I just bought that radio shack one a half hour ago. I promised myself that I wasn't going to get a hygrometer because they are so inaccurate at the high humidity range, but I needed a decent thermometer anyway so I said screw it.

I have it in my fruiting chamber right now, and so far I must say that I'm not very impressed. It does not take an instant measurement at all. It slowly updates the reading, like a few degrees/% every 15 seconds or so. It has been in there for about ten minutes and it still isn't reading the exact temp/humidity.

Just as a side note, these things are not designed to be left in such a highly humid environment 24/7. If you leave it in there I would be amazed if it kept working for you. You raised a good point about the 30 day return policy though. As the guy was ringing it up he told me if I have any problems to bring it back, so maybe I will just leave it in there lol.

The accu-rite one I bought works perfectly fine. Just take it out while misting.  :smirk:

Water never gathers on my screen either and humidity is HI.

If water gathers on your screen try putting some clear tape over it.. like boxing tape. That way your $17 investment doesn't get ruined.

It's not instant, but I like it. I did mention you need to leave it in there between humidity cycles to see how low it drops. You don't need a read out for a second anyways... you want to keep your humidity level persistant

I'm using a PMP so there is no cycle for me unless my water level gets too low or something. How long did it take for your meter to get up to 90%? Mine has been in there for 30 minutes or so and it is only in the 70's.

funny-
mine from radio shack reads up to 98%; maybe it's a different model. does that one have a monitor and remote sensor? they are cool, cause i bought a separate unit for the inc. and they can both be monitored by the master unit. the temp trend feature is nice too.

there is definitely a benefit in being able to monitor the difference between 90 and 98 for sake of the pinning/fruiting.

that was the first time I used it so I read from the box.

Now, personally, I've seen it go to 97.
