How do you guys keep up with monitoring all of your jars?
    #4032495 - 04/08/05 09:04 PM (19 years, 12 days ago)

At this point, I think I am actually glad that I lost 8 jars in my PC(too much water). I'm wondering how I should go about keeping track of all of these jars so I know when to birth them. I have to know exactly what day each jar reaches 100% colonization, and then I have to wait a few more days for them to colonize the middle of the cake. This sounds like quite a bit of paperwork to keep up with. I don't really have a problem with devoting the time to the grow, but I'm wondering if there are better methods out there. Is that how you guys normally do things?

First label all your jars, if your using different strains then label them accordingly, something short to cut down on writing. Second, get a calendar to put on the wall next to your setup. Write on the calendar when jars were inoculated, note colonization points, 25%, 50%, fully colonized and so on. Then all you have to do is look at your calendar to know when to birth and such. It really doesn't take much time or effort.

better than a calendar, use several pieces of masking tape to write notes etc. on the jar itself with a sharpie. i usually include strain and date inoculated. ive never had to many jars to get mixed up (yet).

I had 5 strains and 50 jars. I got multi-colored labels and assigned each strain a color, PESA-orange,KSSS-pink and so on. Then I just put dates on the labels. Inoculation date, 100% colonized date, birth date and so on. Works pretty good, or did. Don't use that many small jars anymore. WBS and casing's cut down on paperwork.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I wrote the strain and assigned a number to each jar so they are all unique in that respect. They were all inoculated on Easter so I have that info as well. I guess it wasn't so much the paperwork that bothered me. It was mostly the idea that the next week is going to be nothing but dunking/rolling/fruiting for me every day since the jars are all a couple days apart in terms of growth. I would like to do them all at once, but it is probably better if I just do them each as they are ready. I just prefer things to be very neat and organized instead of having the jars at different points in their growth.

You could just take jars as they are 100% and ready for birth and stick them in the fridge (not in water) and just keep piling them up in your fridge (if you have the room)...then when they are ALL ready, dunk them all and birth them at the same time. If you want them all fruiting at the same time that is. You can do this in sets too..if a few jars are ready a day sooner ect... Personally I like offsetting casings so you dont have to harvest EVERYTHING at once...

I'm not agar but they are jars filled with substrate, then tyvek square, then metal lid, then metal ring over tyvek, then double coffee filters rubberbanded over his jars.

Personally, I just do metal lid, then tyvek, then ring. And you can write on the tyvek dates and such.

Filing cabinet, with heat pad underneath (with dial-a-temp rheostat, so you can adjust exactly as you want, rather than Hi/Med/Low/Off setting most heat pads have).

Jars of colonized WBS spawn, metal or plastic lid, tyvek under lid, double coffee filters over lid (as exterior dust cover - only).

Agar, is that heating pad under the filing cabinet drawer or under your jars? Nice set-up.

I always like that filing cabinet Agar, it's

But the responses i'd get would be....

" Hey man, why do you have a filing cabinet in your closet?"..
or
"Dude, what's up with the cabinet in ur room?"..:smirk:

Doesn't really fit in, but when i'm able to do More ediables and such, i'll probably go with that, it's....:pimp: (:rotfl:)....

Jars directly on heat pads will OVERHEAT & lose moisture quickly

Heat pad is on a piece of fireproof fireplace panel, under the cabinet & bottom drawer. Heat convects through metal, heats it & rises. You turn pad on HI, then plug it into Dial type rheostat on low.

Then tinker with dial adjustment until you get the bottom drawer 81/82F. Because it is bottom heated, you lose a few degrees up through the upper 5 more drawers. In mine, top drawer remains about 76F.

These are also PERFECT for incubatiing BAGS of spawn, or substrate.
They also work well for small tray incubation.
The better one have a LOCK, also.

I have just aquired a very large filing cabinet. I believe that I will try Agar's setup. It sound like it should work relitively well.
