Perplexed [Pics]

I've recently become skeptical of my jars when they began emitting a subtle foul odor about 5 days after inoculation. They appear to be colonizing well, and i have seen no coloration of the the growth that appears to be mycelium. The smell has receded considerably, and is almost nonexistant. My question then is, how long does coloration take to appear in a mold that is growing in a pf jar? -OR- is this a mold that resembles mycelium. (It did stink pretty bad there for a while.)

Here are some pics:

(SAME PICTURE, one with flash, one without. Didn't know which was more helpful to you)

It seems like almost all of the cakes in my last batch smelled pretty bad at the very beginning. Some progressed into full contams and some lost the smell completely after a while. The ones that got rid of the smell are fruiting nicely and I will be injesting in a few days. If I die I'll be sure to let you know!

Alright! thanks guys. I think i can attribute most of the smell to leaving the tape over the jars and having no airflow.

You have common cake bacteria i have had trouble with in the past. It begins to slime up the rice and make dark spots. It is possible for cakes to still colonize (some times slowly) If the bacteria is bad the mycellioum will just stop growing when it reaches it. I can see yellowing on some of your rice, that looks like the bacteria (left cake up and right from the mycellium).

Sometimes with this bacteria it will only infect a small area of the cake that wont colonize. You can with almost 100% sucess birth the jar and throw out the uncolonized part and fruit the cake just fine. The bacteria comes from not enough sterilization usually. Did you boil your jars?? After i got a pc i had no troubles with this type of bacteria anymore.

They must be fine, the jars growth exploded last night and the jar on the left in the picture above is almost 60% colonized. Thanks for all the info, insight, and help, I love the Shroomery!
