Strange ways the war touches our lives
    #4032134 - 04/08/05 08:46 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Forget all your biases for the moment. Try not to bring your hatred for the current administration and the war into this. I just want you to think of the odd little ways the war has affected you. I'm not talking about people you know who are overseas (or worse, dead). I don't want to hear the standard things like "Gas is expensive now". I'm not concerned about tightened security that you have to deal with. Try to think about the real wierd details.

Example: I bought a truck last weekend. I want to put good off-road tires on it because the stock tires are shitty. There is a certain tire that I prefer that I have always run on every 4X4 I've ever owned. My new truck has 18" rims. But it turns out that the military is using 18" rims on many of thier vehicles. The government has bought almost every goddamn all-terrain tire in the country that goes on an 18" rim!! I have no way of getting the tires I want for my truck right now. The entire country is sold out of the tire I need!! I am told the manufacturer will be producing more of them late next month or early June. Until then I'm S.O.L. and I have to run the stock crap.

I know theres a lot bigger issues when discussing the war then my tires. I'm not being trivial about this. But I just thought it was kinda sad and funny at the same time how every little detail of our lives are affected, sometimes in ways we would have never expected.

I don't detect the sarcasm, yet it is very hard to through text. You have a sick truck man, i'm jealous.

I'm a photographer and these batteries cost like 10 a piece at local camera stores, i can get them on line for like 10$ a dozen, but the company i get them from supplies all the military, and they get shipped first over little ol' me.

i work for a large cell phone company and we let military guys who are going over to iraq/afganistan cancel their contracts early with no charge, or suspend the accounts without having to pay while they're over seas.....i see dudes come in all the time with papers, i just think, poor bastards :frown:

I assume you don't use digital, otherwise it might be more efficient to use a rechargeable cell for your camera. Sweet job though, what type of photography do you partake in?

So you weren't being sarcastic?

If you're telling the truth, then thats exactly what I was talking about. Government gets priority always....bastards!

That is the least we could do for those people. Support the troops, even though the administration is crap.

Summit, I'd imagine some defense vehicle transporting our soldiers across Iraq isn't more of a pressing need then your off-roading use? Unless you need those specific tires for your line of work, then I'd be pissed also. Hard to imagine you couldn't find another quality line of off-road tires.

Hmmm I think it would be in my best interest to not post in this thread.

Yeah, I knew people would think I'm being petty. I'm not though. I understand the need to support our troops in any way we can. And I think about WWII when there were all kinds of rations on the population to provide for the war effort. Its all good, I'll get tires eventually. And you are right about the troops needs being much more important then mine.

The point of this post was just to show how the war effects us in many ways that we don't even think about.

In reality, the war has touched my life very little, although I do cringe every time I read the news, and I do feel sorry for the the average Joe Iraqi and the US grunts that have to endure the conditions there....

well actually i use those batteries for an old camera i have, but i mainly use them in a couple of different high powered flashlights ( so bright they are actually weapons ).
i then light shots with these, they can be hidden easily or used to wash stuff out.

and i do large format photography, you know those old camera that have belows, and you see the guy with his head under a black sheet, those i use for landscape and set up shots, like people or still life's.

and, i just got a high end digital( yes rechargeable, so i save money on batteries and film), so hopefully i can share some work with everyone, until just recently all i could use online was a little Olympus digital crap cam, see past bad pics.

guess we are talking about iraq?

the only real difference here is the real estate is sky rocketing. im going to be paying more for property tax now. thats about the only thing that dircetly affects ME.

gas is over $1 a litre too, i know you didnt want to hear it but....

put that is USA terms, $4 (roughly) canadian a gallon. that is over $3 us.
