Thats fucked up.
Ignorance is no excuse when one takes that kind of action against something. Those rangers should read some fucking books on how mushrooms grow.
Has the scene changed since then?
(i accidentally replied on the original post by the way, hope it wasnt really old or something)

How is it "fucked up"?

It's a national park and you have to buy a license to pick them.

It's comparable to hunting deer in a national park with no licence.

No excuse for tearing up a National Park.
As for the guns, there are Cougars and the like up there.
It's smart to have a gun out in the high-forest for more than one reason. Who knows when you might discover a Bigfoot up there, and he doesn't turn out to be friendly.

I actually posted this over in the News forum and then was really confused as to where my post was.

Studies have shown that the method of harvest which the ranger speaks of actually is for the matsutake. http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/sep2000.html
MJ also claims that harvesting P. cyans in the wrong way is detrimental to future production.

These commercial pickers take sticks and completely tear up the moss/groundcover in order to find their mushrooms. I'd bet it does literally look like a rototiller went through the forest.

many Japanese come here in the fall. Some pay big bucks to certain vendors for their crops. Others have raked the forest floor.

In Tokyo they go at a very high price and every week in the fall, there are thousands of pounds of matsutake being flown express over night mail to Tokyo.

Actually, like many mushrooms, this species has not yet been successfully cultivated; that's why they fetch such a high price.

Like many forest mushrooms, this species is mychorrizal. If you could figure out a way to cultivate mychorrizal mushrooms without cultivating trees, then you would be set.

in Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms

..i cant seem to find my copy of that book right now

but i thought that stamets has at least been successful
with growing them

The difference between the 2 is that deer can have multiple birthings, so you are killing potential future generations. Picking a mature shroom that has dropped its spores poses no harm.

How do you know the mushrooms were mature and not young specimens that hadn't had a chance to sporulate?

I bet the poachers wouldnt care if they hadn't droped theyre spores.

I would bet that you are right. but even so, not all the poeple picknig shrooms in the park are going to be "poachers". Most of us here at the shroomery respect the life cycle of fungi do we not?

I don't understand your point.

Its a National Park, you can't pick or hunt there without first purchasing a license, and even with a license your limited as to how much you can hunt or pick.

And as far as shroomers respecting the life cycle of fungi, many do not. You hear of cyan/azure beds being ripped up all the time.

Yes it is sad...
My point about us at the shroomery being respectful to nature is that we represent alot of shroomers out there (i hope).
