seems to me that the dry verm layer becomes wet after sterilizing the jars. should this happen?

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

yeah it happens.. never has given me any problems though since the verm has no nutritional value in it. its only a minimal amount of moisture too..

Way to not get discouraged from a bummer of a first grow. My verm layer gets slightly wet, but not damp. Do you know why you didn't do so good on your first grow? No PC? or just sterilizing issues?
Anyways do what I have been doing, which is reading the archive grow logs and searching old posts. There is a wealth of knowledge in them, and it makes your grow go much smoother when you know the info before hand.
Good luck.

one mistake that even I made at first is veering off the TEK. "Oh, I did the recipe perfect but I think I'll add a little more water."
For the first time, stick completely to the TEK. After that, you can start experimenting.

did u put foil over your jars? i'm guessing your also steam sterilizing, so make sure that foils over the top and crinkled tightly so water doesn't get in
if your verm is wet after, chances are the water ratio is going to be affected as well, but not always. and lastly make sure the water level is only about an inch and a half up the sides of the jars, GL!

Happened to me all the time. As the others said, it's not a problem. Never had a problem with Polyfill becoming saturated in liquid culture either, but that's another thread topic.
You're good to go, have fun.
