PC'ing Horse Poo/Straw
    #4027418 - 04/07/05 04:49 PM (19 years, 13 days ago)

Im getting ready to have about 1/2 pint of colonized whole brown rice. I;m thinking of just spawning it into a very small container w/ some horse poo ande straw. I was wondering if i could just mix up some horse poo and straw into a qt. jar add some water and PC instead of pasturizing? I dont need much, so PC'ing would be easier. Id just mix up the poo/straw/water, and then after i PC id squeeze out the excess water and spawn my rice into it. would this work?

Also, would i need to case this after it started growing myc? Or could i just mix it all up and let it grow. If I do need to case would a layer of moist straw work?

ya, but you better be super clean, quick and lucky.

Pastuerization is just easier because you have a nice time period not to worry as much for a contam to take over.

Sterilized stuff...anything can take hold.

Sterilizing will increase your chance of contams tremendously over pasteurizing.

ok then what would be the easiest way to pasteurize such a small amount. Can i pre-mix the straw/poo and pasteurize it together?

yes. If you have a digital oven then your set! but if its a dial one make sure you have a thermometer in there cause those dials are not accurate!

bake @ 160-180f for an hour or 3. Whatever you like.

If you got some extra cash, and time, and dont want to do it yourself Tennesee stud (Shroomery Sponser) stuff is awesome. Just letting you know. 5 lbs is little much for a half pint cake but you could do like a smaller tray and get alot more substrate/mushroom.

easy way to pasteurize horse poo:
submerge in water at 170degrees for 45minutes
strain and check moisture content
you could strain with cheese cloth if its just a little bit
or a towel or old tshirt would work great, maybe better
make sure to clean your tray well!
good luck!

so if i put it in my digital oven, do i need to have it in water, like in a pot or something? Also, does it smell when you put it into the oven?

just pour hot water in a pot, cover
turn the burner on low, get it to stay at 160-170F and then submerge your poo/straw in the water (inside a pillowcase)...

its really easy once u do it
