Best methods of incubation?
    #4027669 - 04/07/05 07:44 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

A FOAF has been studying before he begins his grow-op (casing), and he can't seem to find a good explanation of incubation.  His g/f has a small space heater with a good gamut of settings.  If he puts his jars in a dark chest with the heater on low to keep the temp around 84 degrees, will he be okay?

Again, he's been researching, as he posted a few weeks ago about growing and got blasted for not researching, but he can't seem to find any good details on incubation.  One of the guides he read for the PFTek doesn't even MENTION incubation.

Actually, now that you mention it, we don't have a direct incubation tek. It has to be accessed through a different thread in the archives. We need one though. This definitely deserves its own section.

Anyways, the cheapest solution for incubating is a Tub-in-tub. It's an aquarium heater submerged in water, with another identical tub secured directly over top. Water rise up the walls of top tub, and you have a culture incubator.

I like to drill a hole and place my heater directly in it (surrounded w/ silicone of course) so dialing in a new temp doesn't require lifting tubs or removing anything.

Alright, but this method sounds like it costs quite a bit. I've already spent more money than I've hoped and I'm still lacking supplies.

Is it acceptable to keep my jars enclosed in a large chest with a small space heater blowing warm air, keeping the temp consistent around 84 or so?

Costs: Aquarium heater, $12-20. Two tubs: $10-15. How does that cost quite a bit?

This setup is 10x as effective as a space heater blowing warm air. Not to say it won't work, I just can't tell you for sure how reliable your setup will prove to be for you.

The TIT does cost a few $$$ but its well worth it.

If your flat broke...you could put them on top of your frig or in the cabinet over the top of your frig.
I have seen this work for several of my friends.

When you have a few extra $$$ build a TIT.

Save the worry of leak and buy a submersible water heater, preferably 50 watt, and sink it with some grounding blocks. I bought a 50 watt heater from Wal-Mart, two 1/2-3/4 inch grounding blocks from Home Depot ($1.09 ea.) and used them for weight. My water heater sits on the bottom of the tub, is protected from touching any surfaces due to the grounding blocks, and does a wonderful job at heating.

I think I got the idea for the weight on a thread somewhere.

Also throw a couple of cap fulls of bleach into the water to prevent any microbial growth.

I have only been growing a few months, but I am still liking my pickle jar with fish tank heater inside, all inside an icechest. Extremely easy to keep consistent temp and extremely dark inside hehe.

I'd say the best would be a TIT incubator and make and aluminum insulation covering for it so it saves heat. Then have a fan on the inside to circulate the air and give it even heating. It works super good.

if you dont want to spend any money. use a thermometer to check various cupboards.

when i started out i was lucky to find a perfect spot in the cupboard over my sink. it was indirectly heated by the fluorecent tube under it (lighting the sink) and ranged from 30 centigrades one one side to 28.5 on the other. and it was big enough to fit up to 18 big(1liter) jars of spawn at a time (but i must admit i actually never ever even been close to doing that much at one time, at most i had 6 jars in there).

With heat pad underneath - adjusted so bottom drawer stays 82F & top drawer 76F. Simple as that.

my incubator is similar to agar's picture there, i just have a rubbermaid container sitting on top of a folded up towel and all on top of a heating pad on medium setting keeps at a constant 84 degrees farenheit. oh and i add some perlite, water and h2o2 to the bottom of the rubbermaid to keep the jars from drying out! works like a charm and for all those who wonder about dunking before casing use this method and u wont have to dunk before casing!
