Blue Hues - Contam or Bruising?
    #4021818 - 04/06/05 01:49 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have 15 jars, I had 24. I threw out 9 of them because of green spots. Most of my jars will be done colonizing by this weekend or Monday, and i just noticed in 3 more jars some blueish areas. They're very small, one jars has about three of these spots.. they're somewhat tucked under the mycelium, not just on top of it like the green mold. I still have it in my incubator to watch since the spots are so small, but does this seem like a contam or a little bruising? Also all of the spots are on the bottom of the jars, none of them are on the sides.

This is the first day i've seen it so I don't know if its spreading.. I'll have to look tomorrow morning. It is light blue and a little hard to see, some places easier than others.

Its normal to see blue spots some times on jars. Ive seen this in perfectly fine jars a few times.

How do you tell the differences between contaminations and bruising? I've heard that a bruise won't rub off but a contamination would rub off some with a paperl towel

I have colonized around thirty jars and light blue spots that don't spread are usually bruising. It would be a lot more helpful if we could get a pic.

looks like just bruising, have u been shaking it or have u dropped it or anything that would make the cake hit the jar?

Sometimes flipping your jars can cause bruising.  However bruising should go away within a few days.  The reason I say this is because the myc is bruised and not the uncolonized areas of your jars.

If your jar is contaminated there are ways to save the dna/myc and transfer into other media, such as agar, grains, or the karo tech.  This is really only necessary if you have no other ways to make jars. I personally don't like to waste anything especially if it is possible to isolate the good myc growth.  :mushroom2:
