Casing overlay question, part II (Pics)

So, is the overlay on this casing too far progressed to yield much? should this casing be chucked and re-done, or should it be given more time??
Thanks for your help.

How far has it been in the fruiting chamber?
I'd sprinkle a very light casing mix evenly across the top, then mist lightly, just to provide some climate for primordia to form.

Its been in the fruiting chamber for about a week and 2 days. It was put in the chamber when just about 20 percent colonized (although it was relatively uneven in its colonization). See photo below.

Two days ago, I took Diver's suggestion of sprinkling a light, top layer of casing over my overlayed, cased grain. A little less than a centimeter's depth.
I've got a very light, white growth in the casing. It seems too light for mycelium, but there is no bad odor or coloration. I'm trying to decide if they are just light mycelium growth, or contams. Here are some pics.
The photos don't do justice to the lightness and delicacy of the growth, but they are the best I can do right now!
Thanks for the input.

that looks like regular mycelium growth. no problem from the look of the pics. Just keep doing your fanning and make sure temp/RH is optimal.
mycelium growing through patchings and casings at first looks extremely light.
if you see some spots more agressive than others, patch those so the other areas have a chance to catch up.

Sounds good. That's what I'm hoping, too. The thing that had me concerned is that it happened so fast--within a day or so--I immediately thought that the mycelium wouldn't move so quickly, and therefore it might be a contam...

Thought this might be interesting for you all. Turns out the white growth (see above) began to tint green. The dreaded green mold! Sneaky little bastard. I'm not sure if you can see the tint in the photo below--the flash tends to white-out everything. I'll do the salt remedy and see what happens.

Sorry I didnt see this before...definatly looked like green mold mycelium..
Salt is not a remedy, and that casing is far to toasted to even attempt a save, which isnt a good idea every, IMO.

Yeah--you are probably right, but i've nothing to loose with a little experimentation at this point. it is the only casing in this particular environment, so i'll salt and water and see what happens. then throw it outside when it is too far gone, and see what nature herself does....

Thanks for the sympathy folks.
It'll hit the garden in a couple of days...
Got another tray pinning now, so it isn't so bad. I'll get pics up of that one soon...

Learned a lot from this one. First, and most important, is to initiate pinning much early than I thought... Not sure about the contams, though. Casing (peat-based) was pasteurized, and worked on near a hepa filter... Perhaps I'll try a straight verm casing in the future?
What are your opinions on verm verses peat??

Actually you have your health, and other casings to lose. Mold spores are airborne and just having mold growing in your house, puts anything in the house at risk. Beyond that, you put your lungs at risk. Be carefull with it..
