Why does my computer turns off by itself...
    #4024994 - 04/07/05 05:05 AM (19 years, 14 days ago)

...when i'm playing UT and other CPU intensive programs?

I also tried joining the folding@home team but i can't keep the process on or it makes my computer shutdown

Could it possibly be overheating? It only seems to do that when it's warm in the room...

It could be that the processor is overheating, or the power supply is defect or the mainboard is defect.

UT is like benchtesting your PCU. What is your processor/ram at?

I once had defective RAM that caused hard power-cycling (restarting on a whim).

Just another idea.

first thing I would do is download either aida32 or motherboard monitor and check the cpu temp

UT is "TA GAME" !!!!
Anyway, when/if the PC reboots, try accessing the bios, go to hardware information and see if your bios is capable of monitoring CPU temperatures and fan speed.

Yes, get the motherboard monitor... what kind of CPU and heatsink do you have?

Wow thank you all for the help. I'm quite the retard in what concerns computers

Processor is AMD Athlon 3000+, 1048mb RAM. If heatsink = cooling system i have one w/ those normal fans i think. It's more than one fan if i remember well from the last time i opened the thing.

Sorry i don't know what this means

I will download motherboard monitor and try to find if my bios can monitor CPU temps if it shuts down again.

Yeah MAIA, UT is the best stress reliever i know of :rockets:

I think it's a typo for CPU. The poster was implying that UT basically runs your system as hard as it can go (not necessarily true) and by doing so can cause some problems, like overheating or memory errors.

Open your comp and clean the dust out of your CPU fan before you fry it.  :fire:

yea I have a similar problem... when my shit gets bogged down.. boom.. reboot.. once that happens.. it wont boot up again.. it'll keep restarting when windows loads

I've done shitloads of tests and come to the conclusion that it's overheating. A lot of times when it tries to reboot, it tells me that overclocknig failed even though I don't o/c. I've got a fan on this this that doesnt seem to work too well and it's loud as shit too.

Anyone have any experience with liquid cooling systems? I'm thinking about giving this a try.

Liquid cooling is an excellent alternative. Nowadays, there are water cooling kits which are very easy to install, take a look at coolermaster for something cheap but reliable or take a look at Danger Den for something more fancy.

Get a program called Everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3.

Go play your most demanding 3D shooter game for about 10 minutes, alt-tab back to windows and load Everest to check CPU temp.

If your CPU temp is above 50C its definitely a heat issue.

If not then it could be a variety of other issues, like someone else mentioned low voltage to CPU will cause reboots.

Also might want to try different memory timings.

Get a probe program and check the temp of your cpu. Its probably overheating as assuming is stated above(i only read the first post hah).

Open your case up and take some canned air to the cpu fan. I opened up my roomates machine.... oh wow it was scary dirty he hadnt cleaned the insides ever. His bios would make the pc speaker beep in a constant tone and he had no idea why and wanted me to disable the pc speaker lol.

OK i downloaded MBM and my temps just in the windows desktop are: CPU 56C / Case 38C.

Will play for a bit and see how much it reads afterwards.

They're too high, aren't they?
I guess i gotta speak with the computer dude so he installs me a better cooling system.

WIll also try and clean its insides and see if it makes the temps go down...

Yes man waaaaay too hot 56C idle you are definitely overheating when playing games.

It's your CPU cooling thats the problem because your case temp is fine.

I've heard of people's CPU's going up into the 70's and still working..but it's not good..heh.

Your CPU and case temps are both high, and they're shortening the lifespan of your hardware. Let us know what the CPU and case temps are under load though. if you don't remember what your heatsink looks like then it's definately been too long since you've cleaned...Clean out the fins on the heatsink, and the fan, and consider getting a heatsink built with copper, and consider arctic silver or ceramique between your CPU and your heatsink, it's a lot cheaper than liquid cooling, which is probably extreme overkill in your situation unless you're overclocking that athlon 3000 a lot, or unless you keep that comp in a room that stays over 100 degrees.

My AMD athlon 1.2ghz hit 66C easily in my last (and very hot) apartment daily.  Still worked fine.  If its an intel that might be a different story.

It might be your memory. It could be either bad, or just bad timing settings.  Last time i build a PC for my gf, it kept fucking up until i changed the memory.

I agree with lacko.  If its really the cooling that is the problem, you'd want a good thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink, maybe some higher grade heatsink/fan combo if you really wanna step it up.  Do not go and buy watercooling, its defective if you need to go to that extreme.

Christ man i don't see that CPU lasting much longer 65C is the danger zone.

Good copper HSF really helps, and artic silver.
