Death lurks in weed
30mar05
MARCH 30: BAYSIDE teenagers are dicing with death by sucking the seeds of a toxic weed, police and health experts say.
Eye witnesses have seen teenagers sucking the seeds of the castor-oil plant (ricinus communis), which is growing wild in parts of the bayside, to take advantage of its hallucinogenic properties. Police, hospital and university experts say reports of teenagers "getting high" were "disturbing" because the plant's seeds can contain enough ricin to kill a horse.
Lecturer in plant toxicity at the University of Queensland Dr Susanne Schmidt said the weed, common in South-East Queensland, should be removed as soon as possible.
"Very small quantities of ricin are enough to kill a human and couple of seeds would be enough to kill you," Dr Schmidt said.
Manly West resident Trevor Alexander said four weeks ago he saw "a 13-year-old running around naked near a factory, running all over the place".
He was worried about the teenager's safety but did not link it with the weed, which he first encountered living in Moree, New South Wales, when a boy who had put the seeds in his mouth collapsed.
Days after seeing the naked teenager, Mr Alexander was watching a forensic investigation television show, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, in which a woman died after putting a pen, laced with poison from a plant seed, in her mouth.
Mr Alexander then went to the factory and found the castor-oil plant, which they had called "wild tobacco plant" in Moree.

Definitely the stereotypical description of someone on something hallucinogenic.

An incorrect stereotype at that... much more indicitive of a dissociative than an hallucinogen.

Seriously though, someone needs to talk w/ these kids....
Ricin is one of those things that you shouldnt even think about ingesting, no matter how desperate you are for a buzz....

I agree with you there... the problem is that we (through our elected government) have been lying to our kids about the dangers of drugs for so long that now they don't believe us when we tell them the truth about something that really is dangerous. Just say NO to ricin... it is almost as dangerous as the devil smoke pot!
