Discovery About Jars
    #4022579 - 04/06/05 05:29 PM (19 years, 14 days ago)

I am going to recommend that anyone using pftek and 1/2 pint jars (especiall ball)  to discard the lids.  Here's why....

My first attempt at this hobby resulted in a stank odor from infection.  I tried to salvage my jars by soaking them in bleach for hours.  They still smelled!

Or did they?  What I found was the only part of the jar that did still smell was the lid.  It was retaining the smell and possibly the bacteria.

My lesson from this was DONT USE THE LIDS.

My experience may not matter to some of you, but those having a rough start, maybe this helps!

I know that my conclusion about the lids (that they retain bacteria) may not be correct, BUT

If I'm right, I help some people out.

If I'm wrong, no harm done.

Lids are tried, tested and proven. You need to get a pressure cooker instead of blaming the lids.

I know what you're saying, and I do have a PC now! But how can you explain the smell staying in the lids after being soaked in bleach that long?

I think it would be nice if people offered suggestions in a more friendly matter instead of attacking my post.... If you think that PCing would rid the lids of the smell and bacteria just suggest that. Don't have to talk down to me for bringing information to the shroomery...

I think your problem is really with the lids... are they made of Polypropylene (PP) or metal?!
Some plastics retain odors, that's why i'm saying the problem should be in your lids.

Hey hooperdooper3, sorry about that I didn't mean to sound harsh.

You don't need to clean lids in bleach, or clean them period, for that matter.

When the lids are secured on your jars of whatever (BRF, grains, etc), a good duration in the pressure cooker will kill all the bad guys.

Your smell is coming from an error on your part in sterile practices, maybe you lifted the lids and exposed them to some gunk, I don't know.

The lids are metal with some white film (probably plastic) on the bottom. I know I'm not gonna use em anymore for that reason.

No big deal diver!  I'm new, and you were very right about my sterile practices not being up to par.  I'm hoping that with my new PC i can zap those bad boys, but just knowing that the plasic in those lids could be a possible breeding ground for bacteria while metal (tinfoil) won't be, i'm just gonna drop the lids.

Your conclusions are being drawn incorrectly..the lids ARENT a problem. I think I'd have one by now.

Any place that sells canning supplies usually has the plastic lids too. Hardware store, Walmart, they are sold everywhere here.

Screw lids of any sort, why the hell even bother when you can just cover with Tyvek that allows for lovely air exchange?

Jars to me are a waste of time altogether, once you go bags you never go back.

I thought about doing away with the lids and only using Tyvek and was told by some of the more experienced and knowledgable people that my substrate might dry out. Doesn't happen to you?

My TIT has about 20 gallons of water in it right now. Don't think perlite would help much.

spawnbags can be found at sporeworks or MycoBag for a better price

http://www.sporeworks.com/supplies.html

15 bags for $6 as opposed to $10 for 15 from mycoworld
