get a piece of fire retardant drywall to go under the heating pad and set that sucker up like a tit, you'll bet better results and wont scorch your floor

Youd need the water/perlite in the tub with the jars, not the bottom tub. And a lid over the top, if you dont normally use one. That will retain humidity and allow you to just use tyvek. Me...I think its just more of a hassle and water in with the jars and tyvek in high humidity, just seems like its to much of a contam risk for me to try it. I feel the same about TIT's these days though too..

WBS will dry out with 100% tyvek & no metal lid over it. I use two (2) 1/4 inch holes in lid & tyvek underneath. WBS does not dry out.

back to the jars plastic contamination breeding grounds; are you flipping the lids upside down so the plastic is on the top?

Plastic lids are great. Soak them in boiling hot bleach, scrub scrub scrub, dishwash and go for it.

I am going to recommend that anyone using pftek and 1/2 pint jars (especiall ball)  to discard the lids.  Here's why....

My first attempt at this hobby resulted in a stank odor from infection.  I tried to salvage my jars by soaking them in bleach for hours.  They still smelled!

Or did they?  What I found was the only part of the jar that did still smell was the lid.  It was retaining the smell and possibly the bacteria.

My lesson from this was DONT USE THE LIDS.

My experience may not matter to some of you, but those having a rough start, maybe this helps!

wtf are you talking about. Are you sure the stink wasnt coming from your lip? Thats some tweaker sounding shit if i have ever heard any

Why do people keep saying plastic is a breeding ground for contams? I dont get it? What incredible nutrients are in plastic that I'm missing?

AFOAF is using 1/2 pint ball mason jars, and yeah, he has the jars with the topside down, the cakes resting on the inside of the lid. They did colonize the rubber, which kind of made me laugh a bit at how voratious they are at growing but, i dont think that would cause any smell aside from the smell the cakes already have (the only thing I can compare that to is a freshly cut papaya) No problems since he started doing that, seems to be working fine. (i.e. no weird smells)

but with the whole plastic thing where i work we get huge plastic bins full of pickles, very hard to clean and get smell out. Usually bleach will not do it ill let it sit over night. I always use this very very powerful cleaning shit and that does it.

you probably just scared 100 newbies to death...and spred mis-information.

If you have contaminated jars...soak them and the lids in bleachy water.

Then srub the living crap out of them.

Then throw them in the dishwasher.

Your next run of jars in the pressure cooker is gonna kill off anything...anyway.

I don't like rusty lids...so I have been replacing them.

With these.
