Paneolus cyanescens - Jamaican Cane Field
    #4021611 - 04/06/05 12:45 PM (19 years, 14 days ago)

Panaeolus cyanescens - Jamaican Cane Field 4/6/05.

This strain tends to produce an even pinset with an abundance of uniformly sized and shaped fruits. Pins are brown and lighten to a grayish tan as they mature. Caps remain bell shape until very mature. Flesh blues intensely when cut or bruised.

Substrate is sterilized horse manure with a peat/calcium carbonate casing.

Comparison of relative sizes of Jamaican Cane Field (left) to Suphanburi, Thailand (center) and Australian (right).

2nd Flush (young stage) 4/8/05, 2 days after first flush harvest. The lighter areas of the substrate are bare colonized horse manure. The casing came off with the harvest of the previous mushrooms.

One day later 4/9/05

Preliminary comparison of gill structure of the Australian (left) and Jamaican (right) strains of Panaelous cyanescens.
The gill spacing of the Australian is wider and the gills hang well below the cap edge. Grid is 1/2 inch.
The Australian strain will be featured in a future thread.

what ratio's did you use? poo/peat/cal? Was it done off of grains and what type? How long did it take to colonize? Did U use multispore or slices?

100% sterile horse stable manure in an injectable bag, injected with a liquid culture that was inoculated with a multispore agar wedge. No grains were harmed in the making of this photo essay. Casing was peat/calcium carbonate 4:1 ratio by volume "sterilized" in the microwave, (with excess water to make up for steam loss, for 20 minutes). Casing is applied very thinly, 1/4 inch or less.

The bottom of this post Suphanburi, Thailand Panaeolus has more details.

3rd flush as of 4/13/05
They seem to be getting shorter from flush to flush. Perhaps due to less CO2 production as the culture ages. Normally I stop at the 3rd flush but in the interest of science I will let them go through one more cycle.

4th flush as of 4/16/05

It looks like it could produce a few more mushrooms in a 5th flush, but I am disposing this bag to make room for other things.

Wow.

>100% sterile horse stable manure in an injectable bag, injected with a liquid culture that was inoculated with a multispore agar wedge. No grains were harmed in the making of this photo essay.

Is this "preference", due to ease, or do you find it helps reduce contamination?

I have never seen more than a 3rd flush. I know others, have had much sucess with Pans as well. Always go green for my bud tho.

I find that a fully colonized sterile substrate resists contamination.

Here is the 5th flush just before I dumped it. It's a shame but I needed the space and it looked like it was going to keep fruiting at a minimal level forever. I didn't weigh the fruits.

Just a quick question, how did you humidify the opened bag?

I put it in a modified dead refrigerator fruiting chamber but a humidity tent and hand misting works too
