light in fruiting chamber

what have you guys done for light in your fruiting chambers if the whole thing is opaque? i was thinking maybe an LED from radioshack or something but would this be enough? i know they dont need light like photosynthetic plants but im guessing since it is essentially simulating the light that the myc is exposed to when it reaches the surface and during the right conditions (humidity, etc), that it would need some more light. maybe i can lift the top off for a min or two a couple of times a day? what you guys suggest?

A few minutes a day of light won't be enough to initiate pinning. You need to cut a hole and glue a Plexiglas in the top lid, or use a transparent container.
12 hours of light per day during fruiting cycle. Low wattage bulbs (led, small flouro) or indirect sunlight is ideal. Mushrooms are photo tropic, they don't derive food from the light, yet still need a good amount to initiate pinning.

They make those rope lights in blue...but I bought one of each just to put up in my room first...the whites brighter...
Those plant lights are cool too, as long as not much heat comes from it (obviously yours doesnt if you use it well)

The blue one won't grow mushrooms any better than the white one. The white one has most of the visible spectrum, while the blue paint on the blue lights absorbs most wavelengths except blue. So white light has all the 'blue' of the blue one and a mix of other colors to make it white.

Exactly
But blue looks really cool and would probably work well (the white is increible..havnt gotta further then very small pins in that chamber yet, but incredible primordia formation), if someone wanted to
Hell they even make red, if your the type of person paranoid about exposing jars to light but likes to check them, the red ones would be good for the incubator, you could turn them on whenever you wanted to look at them and the red light probably wouldnt affect the mycelium at all. Not that white light really does if its not fully colonized yet anyway...but if your paranoid about those sorts of things and just like colorful lights...

Someone I know used a Black light (a real one not a painted cheap one) to grow bud. He said it turned out chronic without much effort otherwise. Perhaps its something to do with the Ultra-Violet Wave length. Could have an impressive stimulation of mushrooms.

UV will NOT help grow BUD! I know this is slightly off topic, but a black light (UV) will not help grow Mary Jane.

UV wave lengths could have aspects that are shared in both Red and Blue Wave Lengths --- Both Red and Blue grow Bud. I doubt you know the science to prove either way, nor do I. How many botonist have tried it? See my point. Plus Mushrooms dont use Normal light waves the way plants do.

hes rite uv lite will not do any thing for bud its a common myth among stoners. i know because i have tryed my hand at pot and its fun but alot of work but the black light would acualy stress the plants to the point of no return. i got my info from natureshigh.com good weed site

No it doesnt. UV wave lengths are specific and arent even in the visable color range...and are no where near the red side of the visible spectrum anyway. While I do believe uv lighting (maybe not black lights, but ultraviolet radiation) has a good affect on trichome development....it does not have a good effect on mushrooms. Any UV lighting of any sort.
That was already covered in the thread...why dont people want to listen to advice? they keep thinking they're on to something because it makes sense to them..DONT USE A BLACKLIGHT. Simple.

I cut a hole in the top of my box and made a plexi glass window.
I bought a fluorescent aquarium hood from pet smart that takes 18 inch fluorescent lights. The hood is going to sit on top of my box. I also bought a different light for it that is heavy in the blue spectrum. It is called a Marine-Glo light and it is made for aquatic plant life.
I was convinced to use a light that favors the blue spectrum after reading this which was posted by Magash in the PMP thread.
I probably could have just used the fluorescent that came with the hood, but I'm cursed with the desire to achieve perfection in this hobby.

I've got an aquarium hood and right now it has 2 little, maybe 4" bulbs in it (each is half red half white). There is no way this hood could physically accomodate such a large bulb
Do you have any suggestions on which I should buy instead? I would like to supply my PMP with the best possible light I can with this hood.
Thanks for the help in advance

This is what I purchased from petsmart for a total price (including tax) of about $60.
If you want to save yourself about $20 you could just use the fluorescent that comes with the hood. I don't know exactly what wavelengths the "stock" light puts out though. I believe it is supposed to be similar to daylight, but most fluorescent lights are heavy in the blue anyway. I feel the marine-glo is perfect for growing cubes though, based on the article that Magash posted.

well i've already gone a little overbudget (thanks glovebox) so i'm hoping to use the hood i currently have. should i just buy regular little bulbs for it? i was looking at the marine glo's while i was at the pet store and they didn't seem to have any small ones. was just wondering if you knew of any other suitable lights that are smaller
oh, and i just realized these aren't even fluorescent bulbs..shit

I'm sure the hood you have now, with regular bulbs in it will work fine. You mentioned something about the lights being half red? If that is the case I would not use those lights. Just make sure that whatever bulb you replace them with is the right wattage. A long time ago I was using an aquarium hood and I put a 100 watt bulb in it and found it melted the following day.
