question about top layer of vermiculite
    #4021922 - 04/06/05 04:34 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

hey there,
i just knocked up my first set of jars and noticed that the top layer of dry vermiculite was kind of loose on some of the jars...i think the subtrate must have shrunk a bit when i pressure cooked the jars. i wasted one of the jars before inoculation to see if the subtrate had maybe dried out, and it seemed fine...damp, not to dry or too mushy...is this common, and will i now be more susceptible to contaminents now since the upper layer of dry verm doesn't reach the top ? have i already screwed my first attempt up ?

any help would be appreciated.

This happens to me too sometimes. I just let them sit and try not to mess with them too much. I won't say I've had perfect success w/ this though; while I've never lost a quart jar, I have had some PF jars contam, and the loose verm could have been the reason.
