Chatting in privacy.
    #4015866 - 04/05/05 03:58 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

After reading the amazing post on security by Lana, I decided I would add a lil something of my own.  Hope you guys and gals find it useful.

I am, as I am sure a lot of us are, an AIM fiend. Its always open, and I am always holding illicit conversations on it. This was fine when I was on a semiprivate network dealing w/ the technologically inept.  Now I am on a very public network and anyone with half a brain and a couple of minutes on their hands can easily intercept and read all of my conversations. *Remember folks, Aol Instant Messages send as plain text. ( I am unsure about all other protocols, but I would guess that they are plain text as well )*
The problem is clear, and the solution is simple. Encrypt Aol Conversations, but how?  I suggest using Gaim ( available for all platforms ) with the Gaim-Encryption plugin, which uses RSA and the key length can be set from 512-4096.  It has a lovely feature that shows you if the messages you are receiving are encrypted, and whether you are sending encrypted or not. It is not vulnerable to man in the middle attacks either.
So with no further adue,

Enjoy and safe chatting. :mushroom2:

this only works if the person you're chatting with also has gaim, right?

I use SimpPro by secway to encrypt. It sets up a fake proxy on the localhost ip you go thru. Works with about anything can change encryption keys and what not. I likeit.

Where would you incorporate PGP into Regular AIM?

I have searched google and only found PGP Desktop but it requires a fee.
