please help with spyware/virus protection programs
    #3989860 - 03/30/05 11:25 AM (19 years, 3 days ago)

my computer is getting bombarded lately with popups and i have a feeling that its been getting hacked lately by somebody. paranoia maybe, but i'd like to have some kinda spyware just incase of that stuff.

are there any good programs out there you techies could point me to to stop these damn random popups and/or ones to help w/ hacking (i dont even have to have a browser open, i dont even have to be online anymore for the popups to show). any help would be really great, free programs would be great but ones that cost money are cool too.
thanks.

Go to add/remove programs. This exact thing happened to me once before. Some pop-ups intall a program on your computer so they will pop up at specific intervals during the day. Once you remove it, run a spyware check; ad-aware is what I use, you can get it for free at download.com (I think). As far as stopping other pop-ups (the normal kind) install the yahoo toolbar it has anti pop-up and anti spyware with it. And lastly a good free virus protection program is avast antivirus. Good luck.

get adaware, spybot, avg antivirus, and mozilla, firefox, or opera and you'll be good. they're all free and can be found via google. 99% sure no one is hacking your computer, you just have malacious software somewhere. stop using IE.

I really like Microsoft Antispyware . It detects all kinds of spyware, from registry entries to processes running in memory and gives you a description of what each piece of spyware is and how big of a threat it is. Plus it blocks new spyware from installing.

It's about goddamn time they came out with this.

micro$oft sucks my sweaty balls. if you don't use their shitty products to begin with you'd never need their lame ass antispyware tools, that (i have never used) but can almost guarantee are not as good as the ones already listed.

Whoa there! All I'm saying is that my parents computer is continually bombarded with shit and this is the first time in a long while where it seems clean to me. If you actually use the software you will find that it is very well put together. I've used adaware and spybot, they are good too, but I haven't needed to run them since installing MS Antispyware. It also blocks spyware from getting on your computer in the first place, automatically updates, keeps your computer from getting infected from other computers on the network and so on. If anti-Microsoft people spent as much time cleaning their balls as they did bitching about MS, the world would be a much cleaner place.

On my own computer I use Opera so it's really not a big issue. Most everybody reading this forum probably doesn't have many problems either.

Thats like saying "Why don't they fix their OS to not allow viruses?" There is always a way around stuff. It will get there over time, but it's just not there yet. Granted they could be doing a much better job though.

The software is in beta right now so it may be bundled with IE in the future, who knows. Fixing the browser isn't going to solve the problem of spyware being installed with other software either. People like my parents aren't smart about that kind of stuff and they need a stand alone app like this.

i go over board i use as adware, search and destroy,tds3,spyware blaster... and to check things out i use highjackthis and winpatrol.

About avg, i was 100% in love with this anti virus....that was BEFORE they changed it. I know a lot of people having problems with it.. the problems it gives me is when i update it drains my resources and NOTHING i do can reclaim them short of unistalling avg and reinstalling . It sucks tho because you cant turn the update scheduler off on the free edition

Of course i run an older machine p3 500 w/ win98se, this MAY be an issue, but i know people with NEW p4 2.5 and xp that have issues with it also..

soooo ( and i cant believe im saying this) i dont recommend avg any longer, unless you buy their full feature program

well, the IE-spyware problem can be fixed: disabled active x. why is that so difficult? the lack of active x is the primary reason why firefox and opera are safe browsers while IE is not. no, it is not the same as "oh just fix your OS" - fixing their browser would be much easier.

as for this ms anti-spyware thing, I have no opinion. so relax my man. I have never used it, nor do I have any reason to use it - my computer is just fine with the precautions/applications that I recommended.

Antivirus * Looks for a virus on your computer, this can be hidden inside of other files, inside filestreams, etc. Once it is found, the AntiVirus (A/V) attempts to remove the virus.

Firewall * A program ran on your computer that monitors EVERYTHING that happens, and alerts you of suspicious activity *

As for the most reliable of the two:

AntiVirus: 1. Norton Antivirus
2. Kaspersky - Believe it's free

FireWall:
1. Symantec
2. Zone Alarm - Not reccommended

AdAware and Spyware Removal:
1. AdAware
2. Spybot - Never Used it

norton/symantec blows. outpost pro and sygate are the best soft firewalls.

AntiVirus: use AVG AntiVirus, it's free easy to use and I've never had a problem with it

As for the popups...the FIRST thing you NEED to do is STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER, and start using Firefox if you haven't already. Just using Firefox will prevent well over 50% of the popups you are getting. Then get yourself a good spyware removal tool like Ad-Aware or (gasp) even the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tool.

As for a firewall, I HIGHLY recommend that you invest in a broadband router (unless you're still using dialup). A router also acts as an excellent firewall for home purposes. Most of the people I know who have their computers behind a router (like me) never have to worry about software firewalls like Norton (which sucks, resource hog) and you will not be susceptible to MOST of the common internet worms going around these days.

Last, you just need to get a grip on your computer use. No one is hacking into your computer. You are visiting web sites that are loaded with spyware, popups, and possibly virii.
