Should I buy a heating pad?
    #4019717 - 04/06/05 01:26 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

What I have now is 8lbs of cracked corn, .4 cubic feet of perlite, four 8" x 8" pyrex baking dishes, 12 one quart size Ball jars, a B+ spore syringe, and two 11" x 18" x 16" Rubbermaid tubs.

The ambient temperature in the room is usually 75-80F, but since the tub is near the floor... the temperature inside it stays around 60-65F.

If I did get the heating pad I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone, and put about an inch of water on the bottom of the tub, so that would humidify the tub. Would this work instead of misting water in there every once and a while? And it should also be able to keep water off of the caps, which can be quite bad from what I hear.

Also how should I go about it? I bought the cracked corn for this venture... but I heard that it didn't work all that well, I do have quite a bit of perlite though, so that can be used too if necessary. I was thinking of colonizing jars with the cracked corn in them, and then dumping it out into those pyrex dishes to grow in the tubs.

So yeah, any input is welcome, any particular heating pads I should look for?

Here are the pics, everything's there with the exception of two of the four pyrex dishes.

Tit is Tub in Tub, about the best incubator/fruiting chamber recommended!

my advice: get another tub the same size and place a submersible fish tank heater in it. add a drop of bleach to the water. adjust your temp to 84 F.
i personally went through two glass ones until i got the "Guardian"
the "lifetime warranty" on the glass was only valid if the problem was a defect of manufacturing :whatever:
this is what is referred to as a TIT or tub in tub setup.
and no standing water in the one where your jars are

if you research casings then you ought to be able to rid yourself of that perlite (pretty messy stuff, [ that you will not use forever, no matter what anyone tells you.])

never used corn before- not sure....but
if it is a whole grain, then it needs to be pressure cooked, (endospores present which require pressurized sterilization.
the reason why most begin with brf is because it can be sterilized by steam.

have fun

I already have two tubs, check out the first post for the pictures of what I'm working with.

I read a few pages from that link, I'll get to more of them later. But will H202 in the water would work just was well as bleach?

And how much water am I supposed to put in the bottom of the tub for the TIT method?

the one labeled "Submersible Aquarium Heater"

leave out the perlite at this stage, it's pointless untill you start fruiting

Lots of experience with TIT's

Use a 200 watt submersible aquarium heater in your TIT.

I like using the 14 and 18 gallon rubbermaid containers for my TIT's.
That way there is a 6" gap between the top and bottom rubbermaid.
I use about 5" of water.

you want the water to be coming up the sides of the other tub, but not overflowing- you'll find your happy medium.

some people secure the two together with zip-ties so that the second tub is partially submerged- makes for better insulation.

yes, you can use hydrogen peroxide.
bleach requires only a drop,
where you'd probably want a 5-10% ratio in there for h2o2.

who knows if corn needs to be pressure cooked or not?
might want to start making concessions for that question to be answered as "yes" nonphix

Well the 2 tubs I already have are identical in size, I might be able to buy a larger one later down the line, but for now I'm going to be using 2 of the same size.

Would a 50w aquarium heater work? I'm pretty strapped for cash, and there is also quite a lot of wattage being pulled through the circuit that this room is on, so 200 more watts might be too much. Maybe not but I really want to play it safe.

Also, do I PC the corn before I put it in the jars, and then after as well? Or do I just put it in the jars and PC it for 45mins, and that's it?

PC after you've made up your jars.

a 50 watt will WORK - it'll just take longer to heat up... the temperature variation might be a little bit more with that too.

use bleach or iodine, they don't degrade over time like h2o2 (peroxide) does.

your tubs are the same size, so you're going to have to zip-tie them down as reccomended before.

So make up the jars with the cracked corn, 2/3 full. Poke 4 holes in the metal lid, and put it in the PC on high heat for 40 minutes? Then when it cools I'll inoculate each jar with .25cc's per hole?

I've heard of people putting a layer of Vermaculite in the top porton of the jars to prevent contamination, I shoudn't do this with perlite?

And what's the purpose of twist tie-ing the tubs together, is it to make sure one doesn't slide out of the other if I lift the terranium? And if they're tied together how do I put more water in it? Because I don't have ties long enough to hold them together..

The ties are to force it down into the water rather than having it floating with only the base being heated. If it is submerged a lot the heat will go in the sides too. You could add weight to the floating container to get the same effect. Verm is added on the top of PF style jars which are not intended to be shaken. Your grains should not fill the jar and will be shaken so do not add any perlite or verm as it is useless, and will take up valuable grain space

i would personally go and get 2 $ worth of polyfill
from a craft store. drill 1/4 inch holes in your lids, and pull the poly through.
one inoculation site=less chance of contamination.
then, when you've nocced them, place an alcohol swabbed coffee filter over the top, band it, and inc it. 2 cc's each.

if you fill those jars up to 1/2 way, after you hydrate, they'll be 2/3 full when they're done pcing.
