Birth at 100% colonization or wait for pins?
    #4019683 - 04/05/05 11:14 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I seem to have some mixed info on when exactly it is time to leave the incubator. I thought that you just need to give the cakes two to three days after you see 100% colonization. I read in the pf tek for simple minds that you should wait until you see pins forming on the cake. This would be a problem in itself for me because my jars are not exposed to any light at all aside from red light. So masters of the mycelium...what say you?

If its been 3-5 days after 100% colonization, you can birth, or you can wait for primordia to start forming and then birth.

Either way will work.

I would say your red light should provide the light necessary, and I personally wait for the pins before I birth. Then I dunk and Roll. For the learning experience you could birth a couple now, and have a few wait until you see pinning and compare results.
Personally, I love the experimentation inherent in mycology.

You do not need to wait until you see pins inside the jars to birth. I think just about everyone would recommend you birth at full colonization. I forget exactly why it's better the second way. (maybe someone can help me out) The PF Tek is great, but there have been many tweaks and innovations in indoor cultivation since it was made available to the public years ago.

[Edit] Hehe - We're probably confusing you. My point: waiting for pins is optional, but not recommended. (Pros please correct me if I'm wrong)

well i would wait at least 7 days from complete colonization, the top of the cake is last to colonize and when you scrape the excess verm off you can expose uncolonized sub. You will be able to get the cakes to pin faster outside the jars. The reasoning for leaving them in the jars is because pin formation seems dificult for the firs timer. So anyways, pull them out and put them in the tub, they will fruit

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

experimentation is cool  but personaly i dont thank you should leave them in the jar till they pin that has to be the worst information out there :thumbdown:a kick in the ass for the one that wrote that up.

I believe it was in the original PF Tek by PF.
