Zoo doo!
    #4019136 - 04/05/05 08:50 PM (19 years, 15 days ago)

Anyone heard of this? The zoo in my area sells fertilizer called zoo doo. They say it is from large vegetarian animals. Its about $1 per pound. Seems kinda pricey but if I can get some elephant shit seems kind of exotic. Any thoughts on this?

Zoo Doo? is from the Woodland Park Zoo in Washington, and it's supposedly really good stuff. Available for pickup only. Anyways, here's their website for you:

If we are talking about Zoo Doo? is from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.

It's well worth the money you pay for it.

Great stuff!~

Anjing I didn't realize you were asking about general zoo poop, but I gotta recommend you try your local zoo stuff that you mentioned. That's a decent price, and it's definitely worth a shot.

Thanks guys! I'll ask what exactly it consists of. Are there any vegetarian animals that I should be worried about? Sorry, I didn't realize that zoo doo is an actual name brand...

"Bulk" is a term to descirbe substrates that we pasteurize, usually. Straw, poo, compost..are all "bulk" substrates. You can do a small grow utilizing "bulk" substrates though, to cut down on your work to maximize shroomage.

Do a search for "BUFFALO MANURE" on Ebay. Buffalo Steve will get you set up with some great highly dehydrated manure for a $1 a pound.

That's a good price. How does it compare to Horse poo?

Edit: Actually, that's a terrible price considering shipping is ~$12

Thats for 5 pounds..so shipping plus the 5 bucks makes it 17 bucks...5 pounds of horse poo runs you closer to 25. So how is it so terrible? I plan on ordering some of that stuff from him for Pans soon..

First off, shipping costs $5 if you order 5 pounds of it. Shipping can be a lot less per pound if you order more of it. He doesn't try to rip you off with shipping. He charges about what it costs him to ship, but you should negotiate with him on large quantities.

Second, from the Zoo Doo web site,
Quote:

"The piles are turned and watered until the mixture becomes dark and crumbly, bearing little resemblance to the original components. After three months, the compost is cool and ready for use in home gardens."

This zoo doo sounds like a HYDRATED product! Do you like paying for water? I don't, and compost can contain a lot of water unless it is well dehydrated in a dry climate. Plus, water starts the ball of decomposition in motion. As long as it stays wet, it has a relatively short shelf life, and you'd better use it right away. Like I said, the buffalo manure from Steve is BONE dry, as in it is dessicated in the Arizona sun and super low humidity. It can be stored that way for years without losing viability. Here is a picture of it:

I like the stuff he sells because it works really, really well to grow mushrooms, it is bone dry, it is well packaged, and it is very well sifted to even out particle size and remove rocks, sticks, etc.

I have free aged, dried horse manure by my place, and I use it supplemented with the buffalo manure during bulk grows. While it's free and thus very tempting to use, the horse manure is not as good as this buffalo manure for many reasons. For one it isn't nearly as easy to use because you have to pick out the dried poo nuggets, break them up, take the rocks out, etc. After you've done all of that, your first batch of shrooms still smell like pee somewhat because those first batch of shrooms draw up some of the urea that didn't leach out (sick I know but true) because horse stable manure isn't well leached like the Steve's buffalo manure which is collected off a huge free range ranch. With his buffalo manure there is no urea smell at all.

Everything else you said sounds good but this:

First off, shipping costs $5 if you order 5 pounds of it.

It may be 5 bucks for you, if your close...but "actual shipping" when I put in my zip code, was just over 14 dollars for 5 pounds. On his ebay page, you can calculate shipping, I'm sure the person did that and found it would be 12 dollars for them. Unless maybe you emailed him and he gives a special deal if you ask? Still I wouldnt think he'd charge less shipping then the shipping calculator on his auction..

It is hydrated.

I like it cause its only 6 miles away from me...so no shipping.

There is one draw back...they only sell it a couple times a year.

I know people that buy it by the truck load...and swear by it.

It's good shit!~

You're right, it's still not a terrible price, but it makes it look like you're getting a great price and then you have to pay almost 300% the price of the product on shipping.

I guess I tend to look at the bigger picture.

Oh, I didn't see that calculator.  I guess he's gone way up in shipping cost for little amounts for some reason.  Anyway, the calculator doesn't allow the amount I ordered...
