so i bought a steamer cooker
    #4019584 - 04/06/05 12:40 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

well we found a steamer cooker that goes to 300 degrees at wal mart and we bought that to sterylize jars....could this be the reason for contams? or would that be forgeting the dry verm layer in any case i read that you can use a pot of boiling water to sterilize jars so i figured it would work better just not as precise as a pressure cooker. Do you guys think that the steamer/rice cooker thing i bought wont work at all it gets extremely hot and steams up too 300...
thanks
camel

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

it will not go above boiling temp though if ur using water even if its at 300 the non dry layer of verm would be a positve yes for contams if u didn't use polyfill or tyvek how long did u boil for though?

doesn't matter steam is still right around boiling temp. Did u know if u take away all the air pressure(in like a vacuum) water will evaporate at room temp and even lower.

Regarding your other post, you want to get rid of jars that have contamination immediately. Only bad things can come of it.

like i said the water actually boils though ...i dont see how a pot of water would be any more conventional than this cooker...and its no different than a huge pot of boiling water its just not pressurized like a pc thats about the only difference between the two from what i gather

no no im not saying that boiling it in a pot or ur cooker there is no difference in temp like ur implying. temp is the same. U can boil ur jars but boil them longer then P.C. why u pc is because u raise the temp beyond the threshold of any living organism could surive. Just boiling doesn't kill everything. 212 i believe at my elevation or p.c above 250 p.c. better for success but not haveing a verm layer would cause contams

Gniom is right boiling water is boiling water, Ive had steamers, and ive used pots of water with rags in them you still need to use them for cooking jars the same way because steam doesnt go above boiling point unless its pressurized
