I was wondering if anyone had any experience or if they knew that dried mushrooms like this.. you put down some paper towel and lay the mushrooms on it.. then put a black t-shirt over them and take a regular household lamp and put it over it (not sure of the height) for about 24 hours.. does anyone know if this works good?

Drying with heat is never good, leeches some of the active chemicals. This sounds like Moe Howards tek? Placing them infront of a fan for 24 hours beforehand might speed up the process.

I bake epsom salts for 45 minutes and use it as a very effective dessicant. 3 days later they're cracker dry. Easy, cheap, and reusable forever.

do you really have to bake the epsom salts(magnesium sulfate)? is there really that much moisture in the salt already?

Yup you bake them at 400 for 45 minutes. Then they suck up moisture real good. It makes the magnesium sulfate to it's anhydrous form so it's free of moisture. If you don't bake them it won't work.

Rail_Gun, what a great alternative to dessicant. I have a tub of that shit upstairs and never though to try it. I was going to pay $13 for a rather large container of dessicant but, hell, epson salt it is! They make a mean smoke bomb too!

Thanks PhrozenData. Spread it out on a cookie sheet when baking it. I was told to to it that way when I started out and I'm always surprised that everyone else seems to use other methods as opposed to such a cheap easy reusable method.

So does anyone have a good answer to what the best drying method is?
I was originally going to get some good drierite and completely dry with that. Heard that makes the shrooms pretty blue and funky lookin tho. Then peeps talk about just using a fan...that keep them looking good? Fan+drierite best? Drierite alone? Fan alone?

Turn a fan on them for 24 hours, then throw them in the dessication chamber for 2 or 3 days, that'll get 'em crispy.

The drying tek using a lamp over your critters with black material over them is Moe Howard's tek. Everybody who comments on this tek worries about to much heat. My rattlesnake uses this tek every damn time with no reduction in potency. (my snake always gets hammered on his critters...) The trick to using the tek is to experiment with it. Set-up a clip light with a 60 watt bulb over a table. Start at 24 inches above table. Put a thermometer under a black tee shirt
and turn light on. Apprx half hour later, check thermometer. Repeat the process till you find the right height for the lamp to be set at so that the thermometer reads around 80 - 85 degrees. When you find this all out, you are ready to go. Place the critters on a single paper towel, cover with black tee shirt(or whatever), turn on light and in apprx 24 hours you have crispy critters. It really amazes me and my rattlesnake that people will go to incredible lengths to grow critters, yet give no serious thought or research into drying them. Desicant chambers work great, as the other teks I have read about. It's just that Moe Howards tek is so easy and carefree once you do the proper research.

After reading your post I was so inspired I went out this morning and bought 2 boxes of epsom salts. ( $4.00 each at my local pharmacy)
I then baked for 45 minutes and all I ended up with was a hard shell with gooey stuff on the inside. I then heated for an additional 60 minutes and it came out dry as a bone!
I have avoided using dessicant for years b/c I did not want all of those chemicals ending up in a land fill, but your method is enviorment friendly and I want to personaly thank you for sharing it! I will post a follow up on my results using this method.
I will continue to use "The Jebus Dehydrator Tek" for the first 48 hours of dryng and then move them to "The Rail_Gun Dessicant Chamber"...sounds imprssive!
If you want to check out "The Jebus Dehdrator Tek" it can be found at..

I baked the epsom salts dry (as noted above) then place them in a plastic container. As you can see, they formed large rocks after being baked. I used a hammer to break them appart.
I them placed a piece of paper towel over the "epsom rocks" and put my partialy dry shrooms on top.
Then using "Saran Quick Covers" (available at your local grocery store) I....well, covered the container. These are much easier then saran wrap.
I will post my results after a few days...

It worked very well. All of the shrooms are bone dry. I did replace the paper towel for a metal screen though.
Great idea and easy! I would recomend it to anyone looking for a cheap and safe alternative to harsh chemical desicants.

Thanks jebus2000. I appreciate your thanks. I'm glad it has worked as well for you as it has for me. Now I think you're the first person on the shroomery besides me to have used epsom salts as a desicant and I've been pushing it since I registered here. If you write it up in to a tek for the shroomery please mention my name somewhere in it, I would appreciate it. I would have written it into a tek before but I don't have a digital camera to illustrate it like you did. I hope now this 'Rail_Gun desicant chamber' (as you called it) will become the norm here since people can see in pictures how easy, cheap, environmentally friendly, and re-usable epsom salts are to use.
Take care

The bowl measures 12" X 14" wide and is 8" deep. If by chance you are asking b/c you are trying to figure out the amount drying in the pics, let me save you the trouble...8 oz.

As you can see I have added some new pictures to include the wire screen.
Rail_Gun, I will get back to you on the Tek. I think we could work on it together. You write it up and I will add some pics? Let me know.

I got the screen from my local hardware store. It comes on a large roll, but you buy it by the foot. Go to Home Depot or a hardware store, both will have it.

I have been looking for a good cheaper, easier drying method. My thanks goes out to you Rail_Gun. I need to try this out as soon as I have a few ready for drying.
I live in dry ass Salt Lake. I have gone to every hardware store in my area, and none of them have even heard of Damp-Rid, or any of those drying products. I finally found it at a storage shed business. I haven't bought any yet, now with this I won't have to because that shit was expensive.

Can someone who has used both methods please post whether it takes a little longer with the salts? I switched to salts yesterday and my babies don't seem to be drying at the same rate they did with the Damp Rid. The Damp Rid sucked becuz it was so messy....I hated messing with the goo. When I tried to cook and reuse it, it was just so messy and so much trouble that I bought the salts. Baked as instructed and crushed the rocks. This a.m., my babies don't seem to be much drier. I'm cooking more, in case I didn't use enough, but just looking for more input, so I know I'm on the right track. Appreciate any input.

Is it ok to stack to mushies on top of each other in the dry chamber?? i been drying them by a small fan for 24 hours and them putting them in a dry chamber with drierite on a birdscreen that comes 3/4 inches from the bottom and them a birdscreen close to the top for the mushies to lay on ... i have never stacked them on top of each other but also i have never had a good enough flush to run into that problem

Big cheap ass bag of rock salt baked will do the same thing. Either fiberglass screen door screen or small mesh wire hardware cloth (any hardware store has it) works for a screen between the r/salt & shrooms. SixTango

Question for Rail_Gun (or someone with knowledge)
First off, awesome idea Already in the process of using.
My question is, is there a certain amount of salt to be used according to the fresh weight?
Second question is baked epsom salt strong enough to dry fresh shrooms right off the bat?
I have them drying in an air tight tupperware with 3/4 a half gallon of epsom salt. (only one left at the store, I bet one of yous is my neighbor lol) I checked the shrooms after 12 hrs and they are not any dryer. But I also didn't pre dry them first...
I'll be pre drying them today and then throw em back in ^_^

Awesome old thread!
Epsom salts will work, but damprid is readily available and works even better. Fan dry first as stated^^^. And/or buy a dehydrator at a thrift shop for five bucks.
