I wouldn't use 100% Coco Coir for a casing layer.
60/40 Verm and Coco Coir is about the most I'd use.
Find a source of Verm.

Yes you can in the bottom. You may even be able to use perlite in the bottom, or so I've been told. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Road, I think he was asking about the bottom layer there. But yes, if he doesn't have verm. for the bottom, I doubt he's got it for the casing layer either. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Sounds like verm isn't an option, so...
Skip the bottom layer, and just use coco straight on top. It's going to colonize aggressively, so be careful to initiate early (2 days in incubation max)
Just my .02, but it will work. As will straight peat, or straight verm.

just add the substrate right to the bottom of your container.
you don't need a bottom casing layer!~

PERLITE on bottom isn't a good thing.
To much & water pools under it.
Does nada, except take up space.
Where did the SEXY avi go? Nice looking......

You know something pretty cool you can do with coir. Put a moistened layer around 1/2 inch on the bottom of your trays and then put your substrate in and then case it on top with casing of choice. After the casing pins and you harvest, you can then flip the casing over and you'll have a colonized coir layer ready to explode with fruit. Simply take a fork and dig into the overlaid coir layer around an 1/8 of an inch. Roughing it up pretty good. Even it up and give it a good shot of water to sustain a heavy flush and in a day or 2 it will start to pin out the ass! Fast flushes courtesy of my Uncle Buck's flapjack tek! Get'r done!!!!

FLAPJACKS! One of my friends (not a foaf for once) tried that out with great success. The overlay was a bitch for a while but he got it going nicely.
