How quickly do clones go "bad"?
    #4016587 - 04/05/05 10:04 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I started my most recent batch using some mycelium clones taken from my first batch. I have noticed that the pinning for these cakes has taken much longer, and I am also noticing that there are a number of pins which do not yet have heads, which was not the case with my first batch grown directly from spores. I did notice the typical faster colonization, however it seems like the pinning is much different than when I went from spores. I know you can only clone so many times before the sample goes "bad", but are changes like this noticable this early on? Thanks for your help.

im not sure exactly. it works kinda like incest. you could test it by researching how many generations of incest it takes for deformities to occur, or you could experiment yourself with your daughter sister or mother.

A lot of people will tell you that you should restart the cycle w/ new DNA after the first 3 generations. Whether you do G2G, Agar, or any other type of inoculation w/ mycelium, you should restart w/ new spores, a new cutting or new mycelium (From an entirely different mushroom "ancestry"/gene pool) after about the 3rd gen. or so.
