Spawning Question
    #4016190 - 04/05/05 09:50 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, my friend was shooting for a certain yield from the beginning. He was going to start off simple and go with cakes, so he calculated the number of jars needed to reach the yield even if the individual cake yield was only 3-5g. Couple things went wrong, the PC messed up, ruining some jars, couple of strains showed zero growth in LC or on substrate after 2 weeks, and time didn't let him get the number of jars done that he needed.

He decided to get some poo and spawn to that, then case. Well the source for the poo is taking a while and the jars also colonized 4-5 days faster than planned. So in order to meet his desired yield, he needs to find another solution.

If he cases the cakes directly it is possible to get the desired yield but eveything would need to go right and he would have to make sure the pH is balanced to prolong the life of the casing.

He also thought about just doing the remaining jars and trying to rotate everything out, but this would mean finding time to do more jars and needs to make sure everything goes right.

His third option would be to spawn to something other than poo. Is is possible to spawn to a larger amount of BRF/Verm mix, then case? Would breaking up the cakes to spawn and mixing well help to speed colonization of the new substrate? How much of a risk of contams does he face if he has the new substrate exposed while mixing spawn?

Is there any other semi-bulk spawn he could spawn to other than poo, compost, or castings? Anything that can be bought or made with local stuff? He doesn't live near the country so he can't get poo for a week or two and needs this now.

How long until the poo is ready? Just store the jars in a cool place until ready to use.

I store spawn jars in the cellar for quite a bit of time before spawning, and they work great.

OR, you can just case them whole:

To find a place to live between the negatives and positives.

you could place an order with Tenn Stud Subs
for some pre-pasteurized poo.
really not that economically sound if you got to do it all the time, but...
definitely ideal w/ little time.

coming from someone who has used composted cow manure:
it is a waste of your time and good spawn.

contams would most likely get you if you spawned to brf.

no exp. w' castings, but i think that if they were of any merit,
the user who posted above me would be using them.

and he's strictly an H-man.
and i as well, now.

If he spawned to BRF it would be like 50/50 spawn to substrate. Was hoping it could colonize faster than contams could set it. With the going colonization times, was figuring would take about 2.5-3 days to fully colonize. Think it could hold off contams until then?

I figure he will just do the first batch in a PMP, chill the rest, and wait on poo.
