as you can see, planting them alot closer than 12" apart does not mean that you wont get decent sized plants.
of course if i had spaced them properly each individual plant would have been much bigger and had multiple pods per plant.
but this works fine for me, most plants have just a single flower, some have two or three...
but there are so many plants that it doesn't really make much difference!
the tallest are around 5 feet tall.

SOG poppies, fuck yeah!

Out of curiosity: has anyone else propagated poppies in containers in southern California?

I've run into a lot of difficulties in getting them to survive and be productive and I'm out of ideas why. Defying logic considering how they're grown in afghanistan and surrounding areas, the two heat waves this spring killed off most of my poppies. I'm still unsure if they threw a fit over dehydration or insufficient drainage, even after I started using a soil moisture tester for watering.

Any help fixing my technique would be greeted with much thanks < mod edit - no trade/hookup offers in the ethnogarden, please read the forum rules, thanks! >

poppies don't like being restricted in containers, and they dislike hot temps in their early stages of growth.
afghanistan has cold winters.

poppies are more like a winter crop in your zone i would say, try starting them earlier.

nice man

if you plan to smoke/consume anything from the field, i advise caution as they could possibly be the thebaine strain.

i went out for a drive a couple of days ago to see if i could spot where they are growing the fields of poppies this year...
unfortunately it seems that particular farm isn't growing any this year :nonono:

then i got back home this morning and my mum told me where there are 2 huge fields of them, i'll go get some pics when it's dry :yesnod:

How can I tell?

I'm guessing if you smoke the thebaine strain it will make you throw up loads?

it's more like a stimulant, that's how you will know.
you'll have to bioassay a small amount to know.
the likelyhood of them being the thebaine strain is low IMO but it is always better to play it safe if you are "borrowing" from a farm lol

Agreed. Those are so nice. I started mine kinda late this year I dont know what will come of it. I've never grown them before and have no internet and lost the paper that I printed of this thread so I'm kinda winging it off what I can remember from reading this thread. I think one is starting but I have no idea what they look like when they firt sprout up.

I'm growing a Salvia plant too but I dont think it's the right kind. I fail. :frown: I figure I have to learn somehow so I'll just go with it.

No mang, I had a patch where there are tons of deer.  same place i used to grow pot.  they ate the pot every time but i think there were only a couple pods/lettuce material munched before the deer realized they don't like it.  too bitter.
