Mushroom Id plz
    #4015789 - 04/05/05 02:57 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hi all,

I found these this morning after some more rain. Id as follows
Habitat - found on a cow pat, northern nsw, aus.
Gills - They look like burn't charcoal. Kinda light black.
Cap/Stem - Largest cap is 2cm, smallest is 1cm. Stems between 2-4cm.
Characteristic of Stem - Squishy, light brown to transparent. Hollowish at bottom, and more solid but still squishy at top. Doesn't seem to bruise easily.
Characteristic of Cap - Grey/White. Bruising a darker grey (or is this classed as bluing?).
Spore print - I'd say black.
Bruising - Bruising the stem just makes what looks like water come out and they become a little transparent. Bruising the cap just makes it turn more grey straight away. No real strong bluing.
Scent - Smells like mushroom.

They are I believe panaeolus cyanescens, but need confimation.

I have found a relevant thread on another forum, with what looks like identical information for an id and pictures. Please have a look

I can confirm that they are *not* Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanescens.

There's the problem. Panaeolus cyanescens ALWAYS bruises blue. Don't make up colors in your mind man, it's really very obvious... Unless you're color blind I guess.

Here is an example of bluing in Psilocybe weilii:

Blue= blue, not Blue= grey

As far as what you have, they're Coprinus species. Coprinus drop black prints and the caps will eventually melt into a black goo.

Another thing to take note of is the gill structure of the mushrooms you found. Notice how the gills are much closer together in your mushrooms? That's a key part of the ID. Copelandia don't have gills packed that closely.

Last thing, I think that some of the mushrooms from that link that you posted may have been inactive. If they don't bruise blue, they're not cyanescens. Try reading our FAQs about hunting Copelandia cyanescens.

Thank you for your replies. I am a novice with not much experience hunting mushrooms. The id of coprinus (inky caps) is correct. There are alot of mushrooms that look the same, so every little bit of extra knowledge helps. Id'ing a mushroom is hard without experience. I've read tons so far, and will continue to do so.

Gumby, thanks for that picture. Thats the clearest picture of bluing i've seen yet. I've never eaten mushrooms before (i've had acid and several other drugs thou :o), so it will be hard huntin til I find a mushroom that blues.

Regards,
metalslaw
