casing question
    #4015753 - 04/05/05 02:43 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Got some incredible shrinking casing. The casing is coming away from the sides of the container, even though humidity is over 90%... Seems to be a bit of overlay, but besides that, no other issues. What causes this??

the mycelium pulls together and causes it to shrink. It's building energy.

A casing shrinks because it is losing moisture... and that is definitely not a good thing.

Mist the casing several times per day, slowly bringing it to near saturation. What did you case with?

once again dog is right, you should be fanning 2-3 times a day useally after every fan, I give it a light mist until I see some pins. Make sure your temp is around 75-78 F.

Is it fruiting, or has it flushed once?

Not only does a substrate shrink because of moisture loss, mycelium also excrete a complex array of strong enzymes for digestion. The enzymes are present in multiple forms, based on a single inherent genetic sequence, and include a range of isoenzymes, which arise from different inherent genetic sequences.

Those enzymes degrade large parts of a substrate into simple soluble forms of sugars, amino acids and other substances, which are absorbed into the mycelia network with which they in combination with moisture form fruit bodies with.

These past couple weeks I have really began to see how shrinking dries out casings....it will basically defeat the whole purpose of the casing.

It's nice to have a container that has bendeable sides. This way you can pull a side out and pack some mix in there nicely, it's hard to get it down in there if you can't bend.
