Anyone ever had Mono?

Well, here's the sad story.
My roommate gets really sick, and so he goes to the doctor. He comes back with 2 shots, one on each arm. And he said the doctor told him he can't drink any alcohol. He has a prescription for penicillin and acetiminophen (sp?).
And he SAYS he has mono. It was the first thing he said, but he likes to fuck with me. And we SHARE the same bowl all the time. And he just now walked up and handed me the bowl, and I put it to my lips before he went "OH OH OH" and then I remembered he supposedly has mono.
Anyone ever get two shots, on in each arm for mono? Or get prescribed penicillin for mono? Since mono is a virus..
And he can't drink? Is that normal?
Help me figure out what's going on. I don't want mono, and he has too much fun fucking with me since he knows I have no idea if he has mono or not. He'll never tell me the truth and I probably won't believe him when he tells me anyway.

He can't drink because he's on an antibiotic and mono is a virus. Something else is wrong.

Mono sucks, you can't drink because it affects your liver if I remember correctly. It really sucks. Tell him to take it easy.

mono... mononucleolus is actually a bacteria. Having lupus, I'm very suseptable (sp?) to mono, and have had it a lot of times. It is common to get a pennicillin shot (not quite sure what the other might have been) and a prescription of amoxicilin or penicillin are common. My doc has me on other pain killers so I can't take aceitominephen, but I imagine that is a pretty common perscription too because it is pretty damn painful. If your roomate has mono... STAY AWAY! it sucks bad! Most likely he'll just start sleeping a lot for a couple weeks and things will be good. I would recommend boosting up on your vitamin C intake and not "sharing" any germs with him, it's pretty contagious.
I am terribly sorry for the awful spelling in the post.

Antibiotics for Mono? I've never heard of that. Seems a waste of good antibiotics, not to mention the fact that you'll wind up becoming an incubator for antibiotic resistant bacteria. Mono usually goes away on it's own in otherwise healthy individuals anyway....

I just read a bit on webmd. mononucleosis, is a bacterial infection caused by a virus. So I guess why a doc would prescribe antibiotics is if you have a weakend immune system (because of lupus, recurring strep throat, hiv, or something along those line). Tell your roomate to get a second opinion because being on antibiotics when you don't need to be is actually (despite popular beliefs) not a good thing.

It's definitely not a good thing, the more you expose bacteria to antibiotics, the more they obtain resistances to them.

The doctor told me that MONO, is always "around" floating inside and outside of us... Its when the human body becomes vulnerable, lack of sleep and bad diet, lack of energy... basically the lowering of the immune system makes the body vulnerable to the mono bacteria. Then it begins to make its way through your immune system and disable it... some people get it real bad.
I had to stay home from school from a month, for one period i went a few days only being awake enough to eat and use the bathroom. Fever runs high... tell your friend to chill for a long time, drink plenty of fluids.
And the same goes for you, take care of yourself, get your rest, and chill. Nothing draining.

Check out this site: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/ebv.htm
It says that 95% of adults in the US have been infected by the EBV virus in their life, so the chances of you being infected from someone are actually rather low because you've PROBABLY already been infected by EBV in the past.

Well, he said he isn't supposed to exercise or drink, so I'm convinced at this point that he does in fact have mono.
Hopefully I'll be alright. It was still lame of him to hand me the piece.
