Using Barley Malt as Liquid Culture
    #4014823 - 04/04/05 11:42 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I looked all over trying to find malt extract, and i couldn't find anything. Instead i picked up something called barley malt The manufacturer says "
USA Organically grown barley, sprouted, kiln roasted, and cooked - an ancient process using only the grain's own enzymes created in the sprouting process, and the knowledge and care of artisan maltsters. A clean tasting, 'slow burning' source of complex carbohydrate. A more intelligent sweetener. "

I am wondering, will this work as a liquid culture, if not, is there a way to extract only the malt out of it???
Thanks in advance for replies

it will most likely work but it's basicly caramelized, it could cause mutant problems. you'll als need other additives like dextrose

If i used half barely malt, half honey would that work ok??
also
is it possible to extract the malt from it? so i wouldn't have to use a carmelized malt mix?

if you have honey dude just use that. 1tsp per 100ml or so and it will do just fine. Sure Malt/Dex Works alot better for me but honey never fails. Just Mix Microwave for 6 min strain and microwave for 6 more min. Or if you have a PC use that for more sterile ness. Strain with a coffee filter btw

no you couldn't extract it. Malt is just sugar made from barley(basically) So once the sugars carmelized its carmelized unless your god.... Are you?

So just honey water it man and you'll be fine.... or go online to a home brew beer place and buy Light malt extract and Dextrose. Mix 50/50 and do 1tbls per quart or 4/3 tbs per cup

used it pleany of times, it will work. It works for agar also, dont cook too long and remember that less is better. 1/2 tsp per quart of water

Light Kayro corn syrup or Honey would be a better option

make sure you spit into the culture before you inject. Adds nutrients.

Oh and you can change a malt using chemistry (refineing). But it would be retarded for this purpose.

just sub honey with malt. 1/2 tsp to quart of water. It will have some chunks on the bottom but just examine it after pcing and make sure nothing changes besides mycel growth

I paid about $4 for 3lbs of the dry malt extract, my local grocery store (mom&pop place) carries light malt extract syrup

damn , ur lucky prisioner, i paid 5 bux for this shit!!! and i didn't even use a teaspoon. LOL...
Ne ways... today i did a 50/50 Honey/Barley malt mix. I put them into a bowl, and blended them. Then covered it and put it into the microwave for ten minutes. I then sterlized 4 marbles, and put them into the jars. Filled 4 jars up with the mixture and boiled them in a covered pot for 30 minutes.
They looked fine when i took them out, they had a slight yellowish color from the barley malt and honey.
Did i do anything wrong here, besides not PC'ing them??
Thanks

the microwave method may work, I still believe you'll be seeing problems with
the barly malt, hopefully not, next time you use the microwave with a liquid,
add the marbles in with everything else, one is a matter of safety

google 'boiling stones' to learn more
