Where to get oak saw dust, or alternative, for Shiitake?
    #4012649 - 04/04/05 12:40 PM (19 years, 16 days ago)

I'm going to try shiitake's next and I'm wondering where to get oak saw dust. Alternately, does anyone know of another good, easy to obtain and fast fruiting nutritive medium that I can use in a fruiting chamber-due to dry climate- for several flushes?

That's an interesting answer but it's not as straight forward an issue as it might seem. I have a lot of friends in wood shops and unfortunately most of the sawdust is very fine and full of salts, glues & chemicals from plywood and treated lumber and sawdust from other poisonous woods, like cedar (etc...). Not to mention there aren't any saw mills where I live. Any wood shop that cuts lumber and plywood will have bad sawdust. I'm looking for oak sawdust, or similar, that I can inoculate shiitake's on so I can eat them without being poisoned. All those chemicals give me a headache being around them. I'm not up for seeing what happens if I eat it.

got a chain or table saw?
Depending on how large a grow your doing this might work..

Just go to the woods and chop down a small oak tree, or gather fallen limbs. Then, go crazy at them with the chain or table saw and gather up as much dust as you need.
If your doing a large project this is not very feasable.. But even when I am chopping logs with my chainsaw for firewood, it produces TONS of oak sawdust.

saw mills really seem to be the best bet.. sometimes they will cut certain woods on certain days and you can schedule sometime to pickup a specific type of wood.. oak sawdust btw is not neccessarily the best medium for block style shitake production.. just going on readings here but they say ya know, yeilds will be higher but things will move a bit slower.. they say poplar, cottonwood, alder are great woods because they degrade quicker... the interesting thing about these softer hardwoods is that the average life span doesn't usually get over 50.. while oak, maple, and some other really nice woods, while they produce great mushrooms, are an invaluable resource to our nature's ecosystem! check the phone book, call around, i bet with a little time and energy you can manifest the perfect substrate...
good luck!

saw mills is sort of a shitty idea for oak, this is used for firewood and furniture. It is a pricey wood. Not just any saw mill will process this.

Mattmonkey:
I hear what you're saying and it makes sense, really, and thanks for the advice but... trust me when I say there aren't any wood mills around these parts... for hundreds of miles. Spangladesh is a very remote and arid nation.

Tahoe:
BBQ's galore, I never thought of that, good one. How well does the mycelium colonize the chips vs saw dust? As far as a softer, non poisonous hardwood, I can probably get hold of some poplar scrap and rip it to shit but that seems more laborious than it's worth. Shit, how does one catch and isolate the dust under a table saw without it mixing with other more noxious crap? What a fuckin' nightmare.

monkey, its zipped up, wood lovers dont contam like grain,
dust turns white or bleached once colonized chips will show better rhizos. The saw dust acts as a filler for the chips

Pet shops sometimes carry broad leaf hardwood chips (usually Beech chips in Europe) used for animal bedding. I have grown shiitake on sterilized Beech chips alone, without sawdust.

By the way, the glues used in plywood making are non-toxic. I have grown mushrooms on both birch and oak plywood. You couldn't make money on a commercial grow this way, but for a big city dweller like myself, good hardwoods are as close as the lumber yard. Cut the plywood into strips, soak in water for a few days, and inoculate. It works great, trust me. The mycelium rips right between the sheets, consuming all the glue first, then it goes to work on the birch or oak.

A local cabinet maker uses oak for his cabinets. Hes a Mennonite guy and we have a system where he gives me all the sawdust I can carry (from his planer, only when hes doing oak) and I bring him some shiitake. Pretty easy.

Tahoe, you must be as dumb as a fucking rock.

if you absolutely need a picture, i can get you one.

mountains of sawdust are considered a fire hazard. the mills can get fined or shut down temporarily if they don't get rid of the sawdust.

the only sawmill here that wouldn't give me free sawdust when i asked was t&j lumber. the only reason they wouldn't give me the sawdust is because they have a contract with a company that picks up their sawdust. they pay to have the sawdust hauled off. letting others take it away for free is a violation of the contract and they can get in legal trouble for allowing that.

is a Mennonite guy a saw mill? Didn't think so. I said MILL. I also said that oak was used for FURNITURE. Sure the guy will give away sawdust but what does this have to do with MILLS? I dont have any Mennonites around here but there is a Georgia Pacific Saw Mill that uses fir and has huge piles of fir chillin out front of the mill but it gets thrown on a train and taking to the plywood mill where they make plywood and particle board. You impress me.
